Nelson fires
I just wanted to Express support and best wishes for all caught up in the fires at present. I recall vividly the Port Hills situation which came within a few hundred meters of our home. Neighbors up the hill were not so lucky. This event seems to have similarities and the weather forecast is going to be vital. My local knowledge last time was that if we got an easterly we were in deep ****, and so it transpired. I dont have local microclimate knowledge of the Tasman area but I hope things go as well as possible for all involved

Re: Nelson fires
My experience with bush fires is living in Sydney during the 1994 bush fires, I lived not far from the Lane Cove fire, smoke blowing through the streets. Not pleasant and no doubt very scary for people who have their homes in or near the bush.

Re: Nelson fires
A little OT, but yesterday was also the 10th anniversary of Australia's deadliest 'Black Saturday' bushfires in Victoria, coinciding with record-breaking temps in the state that day...

Smoke haze from the Nelson fires clearly visible from Wellington this evening. Made for an impressive sunset.

Beautiful photos. In the second photo the new airport car parking building looks like it's blending in with the background.BeaconHill wrote: βFri 08/02/2019 22:31 Smoke haze from the Nelson fires clearly visible from Wellington this evening. Made for an impressive sunset.

Re: Nelson fires
The cladding certainly helps blend it in somewhat (except for the LARGE illuminated advertising sign on the North side). Does block a large section of the view of Lyall Bay though. On the plus side, it blocks 99% of the hideous looking new Rydges hotel that is almost now complete behind the parking building.Thunder081 wrote: βFri 08/02/2019 23:09Beautiful photos. Overnight northerly in Wellington and Cook Strait means smoke is far less visible today. Also probably means the sea breeze will will kick in much quicker in Nelson area and possibly get stronger today. Not good if that happens!

Re: Nelson fires
There were one or 2 fires around South Canterbury this afternoon. It's dry here as well. Think they would of learnt from the Nelson District Fires.

Re: Nelson fires
Itβs been said by Razor already but remembering the Chch fires my heart goes out to everyone affected and the whole Nelson-Tasman region. Hope to goodness that these arenβt deliberate like ours were! And that somehow the models are wrong and some rain arrives.
