Frosts 2019

Just like the old days when we would get a frost every month of the year, last 10 years they have pretty much become a thing of the past, so not common now to get a light non damaging frost like we have this morning. Waiting to hear back from a friend who lives where the Hurunui river leaves the Amuri plains, its the worse spot for frost in the area

No frost here but a sudden drop in temp after 4am and no urban heat islanding, I'm on 6.4C exact same as rural MetService site. My lows have been 1-2C above that most of Jan and Feb.

Down to zero this morning. The pumpkin leaves have been bitten. Thank goodness we covered up the passionfruit last night.

Coldest that Tara Hills site has ever been this early in April since records began in 1950.
Its only other 6 colder April T-mins have all occurred in the last week of April.

Seeing grass mins below 0 now in rural areas, but no visible ice yet. It was so warm in March my silly watermelon plant put out a new runner and set a new fruit. Curious to see how big it gets before it gets turned to mush by the first real frost.

It must have been close to ice on the ground this morn. 2.7C Was the low here. Then again with ground temp sitting at 17C it would take a ripper frost to counter the warm convection rising from the ground.

If its in the ground and has formed a good size crown they can be cut down for the winter and covered with straw hay etc, they pop up again in spring.
Down to -0.3 this morning

This one is in a large pot, so in theory movable, but in practice now way too heavy.

The stalks of in-ground specimums will survive some but not all winters unprotected here, just the leaves will go brown.

I have got this one including the newest leaf or two fully intact through 2 winters so far just by covering with frostcloth. Plan is to do that again but will need a large amount of cloth this time and to get right up on the top of a ladder to reach the top!

I do think its better to sacrifice that growth to be able to get it in the ground where it will be a lot safer against frost, above ground the root ball is prone to the cold.
