Re: Frosts 2019
Thanks Richard. I lived in Milton Keynes in the south Midlands of the UK for about 25 years and there were approx. 10 nights in that time with a minimum below -10°C. They were not common occurrences.
With regard to measuring stations not being in the right place, that is a problem everywhere I suppose. Here in the UK, the Met Office moved a full reporting station from Redhill Aerodrome (on the South Downs, just to the south of London) because the low minimums were 'not representative' of the local climate!!!

Re: Frosts 2019
There are certainly stations in the current or former network that have recorded some very low temperatures:
Ranfurly (original site holds NZ low record), Ophir (held record until the Ranfurly one was discovered), Moa Creek, (former) Molesworth, Manorburn Dam, Tara Hills, Garston … In the North Island, there was a very cold site (T-minwise) in Minginui Forest.

Grass was white from frost this morning but nothing much else as high cloud from the west moved across.

Looks as if the lowest Tmin for Hanmer Forest is still -13.2C (originally read as 8.2F) in July 1934 (records 1906-1995 and 1996+).Richard wrote: ↑Tue 02/07/2019 07:397/6/2012 we had a -13 frost after a 30cm snowfall the day before, a car gauge picked up a pocket of cold air near frog rock of -15deg.Simon Culling wrote: ↑Tue 02/07/2019 02:40
Richard, what is the lowest temperature you have recorded in the Amuri Basin - and does anyone know the lowest recorded at the various sites in Hanmer Springs?
As Bradley mentioned there would remote areas in NZ where there are no recording stations that must see some brutal temps, the valleys of the Molesworth cattle station would be one.

Re: Frosts 2019
Yes I often wonder if there was a NZ version of "Peters Sink" in Utah which would trap cold air in a natural sinkhole up in the alps in Canterbury or even Otago. The temperature can sometimes be as much as 39C warmer in the warmer air above the valley in Peters Sink, it also rarely goes 4 consecutive days without freezing, even in summer...Richard wrote: ↑Tue 02/07/2019 07:397/6/2012 we had a -13 frost after a 30cm snowfall the day before, a car gauge picked up a pocket of cold air near frog rock of -15deg.Simon Culling wrote: ↑Tue 02/07/2019 02:40

Re: Frosts 2019
Slight frost this morning with the thermometer dipping down to zero.
Could be more frosts here as this bout of cold weather continues.
