There was a tornado in Frankton, Hamilton in the 1920's, I think, which did some damage and one in Waimate, here in South Canterbury, a couple of years ago, that damaged an old homestead. Lucky there were no people in it at the time.

It could be good if you could try to get some photos to upload here when you see these clouds, as they are reasonably rare, and people are very interested to see the sky conditions when they occur.

It wasn't a "mini" tornado, there's no such thing.
A tornado is a tornado whether it be large or small.
"Mini" is a term that the media uses as opposed to the tornados they get in the USA.
I remember seeing that article on Stuff Interesting.

i am sick of that mini word .

i think i saw a site that called the albany tornado back in 2011 mini. i also recalling someone calling the hobsonville rain wrapped tornado mini. those were not mini tornadoes. they were the real deal.

matamata tornado last year. there was a small funnel cloud which obviously touched down ,picked a boy up ,caused damage to stuff

In science mini supercell is a commonly used term. The Albany tornado was produced by a mini supercell.
Mini tornado is a media term which originated from the UK.

The Met Service thought the Hobsonville event was a wet microburst rather than a tornado. There was a similar event near Rotorua that same day which resembled a microburst.

they are also known as rain wrapped tornadoes apparantly. i was in the hobsonville event. i saw the albany tornado too. but on wikipedia tornadoes of 2012 the hobsonville event is on there.

the albany tornado was less deadly as it killed only one person

hobsonville 3 people died.

i still think hobsonville event was a tornado. i saw metservice blog about it being micro burst. i ask weatherwatch and they said it was a rain wrapped tornado. they also said the rotorua event was a tornado.

confusing.

Ok I haven't updated this for a while . There was a damaging tornado in coppers beach far north of the north island on the 5th of june. did a bit of damage. I think that might of been ef1. went up there and helped clean my relatives yard as the tornado tore through their neighborhood. their house had minor damage but there was lots of debris around.
relatives described hearing a fright train sound. then debris started flying around in the air. they knew it was a tornado so they went into their hallway till the twister passed.

ok august last month at least 4-5 tornadoes touched down over the north island.

11th august-a tornado was reported in east auckland suburb of saint heliers. knocking down fences and lifting some roofs.

12 august- tarnaki had two tornadoes reported. one near central new plymouth and one in south taranaki . the central new plymouth tornado was near bell block and caused considerable damage to some houses and injuring a women as well. the tornado in the south downed trees.

in auckland. a Tornadic waterspout hit the auckland waterfront sinking boats tossing cars into the viaduct. and throwing a container onto a car only causing a minor injury to the person inside. damaged a resturant and it was reported to have ripped through Qween street. this tornado left debris scattered all along the viaduct.

17 august a tornado touched down in the taranaki town of awakino causing moderatly damage to some homes a couple of them unhabitable. the tornado left debris scattered around the small area and also the awakino river also had debris. which meant the tornado must of gone onto the river after causing damage. and turned into a waterspout.

august was a thundery and tornadic month for the north island.

Re the Akld waterfront event on Aug 12, just for the record I'm not entirely convinced it was tornado/waterspout, and neither is MetService by the looks. The CCTV video footage of the large catamaran being flipped looks more like straight-line winds that could just as easily have been from a microburst, which are far more common in NZ than tornadoes, but often mistaken as such.

This footage shows something moving in front of street lights in a very narrow area, and coincides with a power flash. This to me suggests a tornado, although I suppose a very small microburst could do the same.

i thought that too. but i saw a clip somewhere where it showed rotation in the water. so who knows. there was an witness who said they saw a tornado going through Qreen street. but i thought microburst too. as well as the saint heliers. i thought that would of been a big gust of wind. cause it was from a severe warned thunderstorm. and it had the ability to produce strong squally winds. oh and stuff.nz reported it as "mini tornado" I hate that term. small tornadoes was a possibility on the night of the 12 for auckland. so maybe tornado. maybe microburst who knows.
