Every summer is different and the summer just ended was no different. Started off wet, lots of storms in the NI and cloudy damp and cold in the east while fine and warm in the west of the SI. Then the hot/dry switch got suddenly turned on for Jan- Feb. But what wasn't a normal summer was one, Marlborough had no storms that I remember, and two, Alexandra never once took out (correct me if I'm wrong) a daily high temp, now that was far from normal.
For here the summer was like the summers of 2000- 2010, it was common during that period to have two-three week heat waves in Jan- early Feb, where 2010 onward the summers saw those hot periods largely disappear.
Whats everyone else's thoughts?

Really enjoyed Jan-Feb. Would have been even better if I had been able to spend more time in Nelson-Marlborough.

Auckland summer has been good particulary as we had an OK spring. December was unstable with about 6 days with thunder in the Auckland vicinity. Jan/Feb very stable but thats typical.

Re: Thoughts on the summer just gone
I agree this summer has been much more like the 2007-2011 period. But the key thing weird about this summer was an incredible lack of summer afternoon sea breezes. We usually get a moist westerly blow in in the afternoon evening on high pressure days. Very little to none of that this year. I don’t recall a summer without sea breezes since I’ve taken notice of weather closely (since about 2006).

Wonderful summer in ChCh. Going by Jeff Northcotts station 21 days over 30 degrees which is about triple the average.
Its a bit on the dry side hence the elevated fire risk- some rain would be good!

Some memorable thunderstorms in December , mostly settled weather here from Boxing Day, a very good Summer.
