Keeping an eye on Monday night, trough due to sweep eastern SI cold upper air of -30c and good moisture too.
It is more at night but weve had thunder/hail set ups at night before during april, given warm sea temps etc.
Snow to around 600 to 700m too.

Hope it's not an April Fool ;)
.....but I feel sorry for the West coasters with another bout of heavy rain forecasted, which might hinder the clearance of State highway 6 from the previous deluge. :eek:

Probably another boring month here, May is usually a good month for storms here.

Yes. Looks as though a few intense anticyclones are lined up to pass over us, at the moment. 8)

Yes, using the word monsoon is totally irrelevant.

They are warning of 25+ mm/hr rain rates, hope they don't eventuate. It is the time of the year we seem prone & it's from the right direction to flood us.

Um,sorry for offending. Outrage is too easy in this day and age. I used the words Monsoon Season as that's what my West Coast relatives refer to March and April as. Unlike their Mayor who bizarrely claimed NW rainstorms are uncommon at this time of year. Now theres someone to be outraged about

No way that I'm offended, but I could certainly imagine the 'coasters' using a word like that though.

Warm moist air and cold surface conveyor belts creating a text book baroclinic leaf on tonights water vapour 8pm satellite snap shot. Nice moisture feed also in the mid levels will assist some fairly decent downpours in many areas of the NI behind the warm front tomorrow.

Yes, some downpours on the cards for the North Island later tomorrow. Instability is not great but there will be enough there for some cb formation with the front. Note also the subtropical jetstreak has its poleward exit over the upper North Island in the evening which suggests upper level divergence/lift.

Well I have a Bach on the coast and my folks live there and it's always been spring called the monsoon season, obvious really given that's when the roaring forties get going with more depressions coming through.

Awoken by great heavy raindrops plonking down, seems to be northerly, very mild and "tropical"-smelling.

The westerlies generally wind up more by October or September. If you look at the wettest 3-month averages starting a bit on the "other side' of the main divide it's quite interesting:

Jun-Aug max for (eg) Hanmer, Tekapo, Pukaki;

Aug-Oct max for (eg) Collingwood, Takaka, Coleridge, Craigieburn;

Sep-Nov max for Murchison;

Oct-Dec for many West Coast locations as previously indicated, plus (eg) Arthurs Pass, Routeburn, Queenstown;

Nov-Jan for Mt Cook, Milford.

The variations across seasons in these places are not large, but the max & min pairs are pretty consistent regionally and also historically (looking at older periods as well as 1981-2010).
