We're using a RTL-SDR (Software Defined Radio) with a V dipole antenna to download data from the NOAA 15, 18 and 19 satellites which make about 8 passes over NZ each day. The RTL-SDR is controlled using the SDRSharp application on a laptop, which then feeds the captured audio into the WXtoImg app. This app does all the complex image processing, including removing the impact of the doppler affect on the frequency as the satellite flies about 850Km overhead at just over 7Km per second. Assuming that you’ve got everything set up perfectly, you'll get about 15 different images which cover multiple data types ie. the visible spectrum, infra-red spectrum, sea temperatures, air temperatures, precipitation and others which I haven't figured out what they are as yet. And if you’re catching multiple passes of the same general area, it can merge multiple images into a single composite image.
