Upper North Island T-storms - Apr 23

Unread post by NZstorm »

Upper level cold pool sitting over the Auckland region tomorrow timed with peak heating. Depending on low level convergence we may see an isolated thunderstorm/hail pop up. Something to keep a watch on.

500mb chart midday.

I've given up on any thunderstorm risk down here in this neck of the woods at the moment.
Might take up a more interesting hobby like golf? :-$

Hearing plenty of thunder here atm, with Bliz showing a couple of CG's around the SE of Waiheke.
Heavy 4.5mm, 10 minute downpour around 7am this morning.

There were 4 funnels/waterspouts at the same time at one stage. Too far off for a decent pic.

Still hearing distant thunder here.

Unfortunately just out of hearing range from here. Currently a 44c difference between the water and 500 hPa, so a nice recipe for spouts. With day time surface heating to come, hopefully the 119 day thunder drought here is a good chance fall today.

Thought I'd clean-up and repost these great pics taken north of Waiheke by Paul Dyson on Twitter, as it's not that often you see good pics of multiple waterspouts around Auckland.

This was the sun lit backside of that cell from my vantage point looking east over Rangitoto from Devonport.
