The southerly is knocking on Wellington's doorstep! This is on the south coast near Owhiro Bay.

Re: First Major Winter Storm of 2019
pea size hail and thunder up here just now.
The cyclone remains cut off and is heading NNE, about 50km more west than EC's latest 18z run. It's cloud circulation is looking a little more symmetrical as well. This is going to be an aggressive cyclonic NW quadrant going into the Cook strait. Batten down the hatches Wellington.

It’s struggling to let go of us here, the rain just intensified. Chain showers now setting up in the bight, I may have been a bit premature earlier.

Could gusts in Wellington get stronger than 100 km/h which is what MS is saying?Cyclone Tracy wrote: ↑Sat 01/06/2019 12:47 pea size hail and thunder up here just now.

The cyclone should swing more NE in the next few hours which will tightnening the gradient into Cook strait. IMO gusts could go 120 km/h in the time period of 7pm to midnight.Thunder081 wrote: ↑Sat 01/06/2019 13:01Could gusts in Wellington get stronger than 100 km/h which is what MS is saying?Cyclone Tracy wrote: ↑Sat 01/06/2019 12:47 pea size hail and thunder up here just now.

Some interesting cloud-forms marching up the coast, also some cloud to the south with that faint pinkish-yellowish tinge that signifies snow within.

Also, spent the last 36 hours storm chasing. there are some amazing snow accumulations at the top of porters, upwards of 50cm with snow showers still occurring. Full video coming on my youtube channel in a few days if anyone is interested.

Wow the wind is really ramping up now in south Wellington the airport is recording SW 72 km/h with a gust of 100 km/h in the last 10 minutes. Sea spray is being whipped up in lyall bay and you can see it on the webcam here: https://www.cornish.co.nz/contact/webcam/?no_cache=1

A number of aborted plane landings with the arrival of the strong southerly in Wellington. The wind really kicked in with some force about 3 hours after the original southerly change. It is howling in the powerlines outside now!

Re: First Major Winter Storm of 2019
Had to drive to Rangiroa, going over the Kowhai river, looked upstream to see a half full dirty river bed, looked down stream to see no water, remarkable timing to be going over the bridge just as the front of the flood surge pasted under. 3-4 kms further on there was a heap of hail on the sides of the road, the bloke who owns a nearby stock food outlet said they had a amazing stationery storm around 1.00am, went on for ages he reckoned, a nearby house was flooded out from the weight of hail on the roof, the hail I saw had been laying for 12 hours.

Really strong winds in Waitaha cove on Wellington South Coast the wind seems to funnel through here. I was recording gusts over 100km/h on the handheld.

Re: First Major Winter Storm of 2019
This tweet on WeatherWatch shows a picture from Oxford ,Canterbury (which I think was taken on Saturday) with quite a few cintimetres of snow on the ground. Looking at the topographical map of NZ it lies at an altitude of between 250-300m and is about 50km inland from Christchurch. The lowest temperature at Christchurch Airport (from the METARS) in the last 24 hours of mostly continuous rain has been 6°C. That is a significant temperature contrast over such a short distance and altitude.

Probably vulnerable to N/NW gusts as well through there. Can't gauge southerly strength at our property, but we know when there's a strong N/NW flow.

Re: First Major Winter Storm of 2019
Wellington is having one of those classic ‘chain shower’ setups tonight. Big squally showers interspersed with strong winds.
