Re: General June Weather
Coldest morning should turn into one of the warmest days this month, although we are still on 10C. This period of frosty days certainly keeping the mean and mean low down while the high remains the same as last year.
Interesting look at Jeffs data comparing June 19 to June last year http://weather.northcott.co.nz/index.ph ... h-and-year

Re: General June Weather
Some colder air arriving Thursday into Friday but doesn't hang round for long.
Snow accumulation for the next ten day outlook looks depressing for the ski fields

Re: General June Weather
Significant variations in temperature across Canterbury last night. It was over 10C with ~30% humidity at Sugar Loaf on the Port Hills while below freezing with ~90% humidity at ChCh airport. Similar stories outside ChCh - mild in Springfield while freezing at Ashburton, mild in Fairlie while freezing in Twizel. Was presumably something to do with local variations in the westerlies.

It was a bit like that here last night, 0.8C late last night just before going off to bed whereas it was 13C in Dunedin.

Re: General June Weather
the first half of the month was wet while the second 2 was mainly dry. we had 2 thunder days which was 1st june and 5 june. which was pretty exiting.
edit: as many know there was tornadoes in the far north on the 5th of June. i went up there a couple of weeks ago and a few relatives lives in coppers beach so I asked them what it was like and they said that they could hear a fright train (which most people describe sound of tornadoes) and then stuff started getting blown around. they knew it was a tornado straight away. I helped them clean the debris off their property as they are in their late 50s

Re: General June Weather
I think you mean Freight train of which they don't get much in Northland but now Shane Jones promises 2 billion dollars to improve railway service in Northland.
If that happens, you may here the sound of freight trains to compare the sound of a tornado moving through up there.?

Re: General June Weather
I can recall the winters in Upper Waitohi when the south facing hills built up frost over a period and it looked like snow. we used to go tobogganing on it. In that location there was very little wind in winter and we would often get 20 deg F frostssnowstormwatcher wrote: ↑Sun 30/06/2019 16:30 Went for a drive to the Te Moana Gorge behind Geraldine this afternoon, was surprised to see the river completely Frozen over in Places at least a weeks worth of frost frozen in layers. car Thermometer was only showing 4c at 2pm in the afternoon.

The sunnier drier trend that started at the beginning of the year has continued.
Frost free here so far this year.

May and June have been noted for lowish rainfall and high sunshine for much of the country.

Temperature extremes at Grey Lynn weather station were Max 19.6C min 3.9C.
I see Timaru Airports mean daily min for June was minus 0.7C. Frost on 24 days. But the airport would be a lot colder than the town.

It woud be.
I've seen the MS site at RPA at Levels. Very exposed.
I recorded 20 frosts here in Raukupuka, more so probably than up in the Downs.

Re: General June Weather
There may be a revision (downwards by a handful of hours) for Kelburn sunshine, details later. Even so, the modest surplus still gives us the sunniest June since 2008. Several intervening ones were very dull.
