Possible, but more likely a few hours later in the evening.snowchaser01 wrote: ↑Thu 25/07/2019 08:56 Would anyone be able to assist me in predicting the chance of fog early evening (around 6pm) in Christchurch today. Got a flight out to Wellington and hoping there aren't any complications.

Re: General July Weather
The fog got swept away overnight here. Just high overcast and a bit milder.

Fog cleared here before 11am. Plenty of fog here this Winter, usually gone before 10am though.

Mid next week could be a top up for the SI ski fields if the modelling holds firm. Early days but I see Tony is keeping his eye on it too

Other models are now following the GFS ensemble from 2 days ago by also projecting a synoptic scale Tasman cut off low for the end of July.
On 91mm for July so far, so still a chance of topping 100mm for the first time this year. Ave locally for July is 114mm.

Feels like spring already, have a fine mild day without any cold start. Mowed the lawn as it had grown quite a bit. The slight increase in sun angle compared to winter solstice is getting noticeable now.

At Mayfield today.
Noticed unusual sun through the higher cloud there this afternoon.
Obvious Cs up there with a circle around the sun.

Re: General July Weather
With the developing system over the Tasman Sea, isolated thunderstorms become possible over the upper North Island tomorrow but more possible Tuesday. An organised line may develop in the Tasman Tuesday and move into the west of the North Island late in the day.

A disturbed pattern with cold upper levels this week, we should hear some thunder here this week. Snow on the hills in the south of NZ this week..

2 cents worth.
Multiple upper troughs ballooning into a 300 km/h + polar jet, forcing interaction with the subtropical jet SW of Africa and the southern Indian Ocean. The third pulse in the sequence is a total beast but still too early to tell if it peaks over NZ around 4th and 5th August.

Warm front inching through Northland. An isolated CG in the gulf east of Whangarei in the last 30 min. DP has been around 13c all day locally. Might get a lucky downpour later tonight.

General July Weather
One of the most pronounced warm fronts I have ever seen. Up there with one in the summer of 2011? That made everyone’s windows sweat on the outside due to the sudden temp rise.

Southern Annular Mode is forecast to drop to some extremely low levels over the next few weeks, should increase the storminess of the southern ocean and hopefully New Zealand as well

Re: General July Weather
There was couple of lightning strikes on tracker near Piha at midnight with the front. A lack of moisture is the reason why lack of storms.
500mb -30C today, so hail about. Isolated rumble too.
