some information about the devastating event. tornadoes are rare for china. I think the last tornado in china was in 2016

This guy got more than he was bargaining for. The tornado moved towards where he was filming, although initially it looks like it would pass him by.

According to this recently published paper, tornadoes are common in China. The paper, which is paywalled, mentions 4763 tornadoes recorded in China between 1948-2012. Abstract here:

strong tornadoes like this one is rare in china. the last deadly one in 2016

Regions of the world that get violent tornadoes are plains on the lee side of mountain ranges. The South Island is the exception because it is too small to create the effect of a lee cyclone.

The above map does not indicate the micro set ups for smaller tornadoes and the West Coast of the South Island is one because of the barrier jet that develops in NW flow. The low level flow is veered into the NE. In Britian the Midlands is another example of a micro set up for tornadoes due to topography. The Birmingham tornado was an example.
