Beautiful norwest arch developed this afternoon as I was walking down Mt Herbert. Windy on top. Some amazing crepuscular rays at the leading edge of the cloud forward of the arch.
Looking good for a snow for the South Island ski fields on Monday.

Moderate risk of thunderstorms this afternoon from about Oamaru to Chch along the coast, high risks for the coast and Waikato all the way down to Kapiti coast as the cold uppers make their presence felt together with the southwest change.

Here are a few pics from our latest satellite capture from NOAA 15 at 0650 this morning. Unfortunately there was a lot of noise and we only managed to get the top of the north island. And also an attractive plunge line from our wx station.

Waiting patiently this morning for any thunderstorms in Auckland. Meanwhile the old man in Porirua just had the front pass over with some good rumbles of thunder. 15mm in 10 minutes.

Rain radar only shows light blue.
Near the 90 miles beach is a lot of red on the radar.

Active Cbs in the Tasman, hopefully some thunder here later, south of Auckland looks better placed for thunderstorms.

North Shore looks more in line for the next crop of Cbs, possible thunder.

Looks largely a fizzer for Canterbury, possibly the southerly change is later than expected. Though we did have one of those a couple of winters ago that resulted in a spectacular morning storm. Right now, light drizzle

Just a small amount of distant lightning in the anvil tops out to sea, visible due to it being a clear night.

Re: Longwave trough and cold surge July 12th-18th
There was a weak CB between Rangitata and Hinds this afternoon, also the hot spot of Oamaru not sure if it was active though.
I am currently living in Nelson doing a course, its quite amazing how abrupt the weather is here.
We had heavy showers last night before the main band and a few rumbles of thunder over the ranges, but certainly more rain from fridays front than this one.
Another round tomorrow night.

17mm so far for the frontal sequence, still no thunder heard in this part of the world. System no.3 looking quite active for tomorrow. Most models have system no.4's surface low cutting off from the westerly belt around the North Island on Thursday.... watching that one closely

Re: Longwave trough and cold surge July 12th-18th
There was a stunning looking thunderstorm to the south of Wellington this morning that I saw as I was driving to work. Just checked the good Lyall Bay webcam and you can see it sparking up before the sun comes up. Would have been great to photograph had I known!
