Sorry Canterbury folk just back from a fantastic afternoon on Mt Sinclair on Banks Peninsula. plain as the nose on my face that everything is going out to sea. It was only ever a chance. On to the next system, whenever that is

Heavy snow shower in eltham, nothing settling.
In hawera tonight; very cold but doubt we will get anything unless it comes with a heavy burst.

Nice day here in Geraldine, but cold.
Nice and warm with the sun shining into our conservatory.

Walked up Mt Arthur today, edge of Kahurangi national park.
Snow from about 500m upwards, the summit is 1,750m there was about 10cm at the hut from previous falls.
Mainly snow showers this afternoon, i was expecting it to fully close in going by the forecast maps.

Re: Very cold polar outbreak August 3rd-5th
Been snowing without much let up since around 2:30 now. 10cm's have settled in that time, after all last night's snow melted. Could be a pretty significant snowfall down in gore too at this rate. I'd be surprised if the local state highways aren't closed at some point.

I see that. Thank goodness the event has been mainly down south and over on the West coast.
I hope it is repaired in time for the inauguration of the new Hindon radar in Otago.

That 5.05am CG strike was on Mangere Bridge.

Re: Very cold polar outbreak August 3rd-5th
I heard like 2 rumbles and saw 1 flash . its odd cause metservice only had low risk and usually theres no thunder during low risk. anyway. didnt get good sleep woke up 1:30 am due to high winds and then at 5am due to thunder and lightning

Re: Very cold polar outbreak August 3rd-5th
There was particularly cold air in the lower atmosphere with high instability. The low topped cb's in very cold air can produce surprise storms.
For thunderstorm forecasting I use -30C cb tops as a lightning signal because that is a sure indicator.
But science says lightning becomes possible with cb tops at -20C.

Hmm… Blitzortung only has a CG just north of Miranda in the Firth of Thames around 5am. Also heard a low rumble just after 6pm last night, which I assumed was from a CG Blitz had around the Rangitoto Channel.

Also heard the 2 rumbles and saw the second flash. Just loud enough to stir me awake.
