Re: General September Weather
Tomorrows front over the North Island looks a lottery for squally thunder, a few spots will catch some.

The front moves east across the Bay of Plenty in the afternoon and there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms with heavy rain, 10 to 25mm per hour in the east of Coromandel, the Bay of Plenty and the far north of Gisborne.
A trough is expected to move north over the upper South Island in the afternoon and the North Island in the evening. There is a low risk of thunderstorms in the north of Westland, Buller and the far west of Nelson in the afternoon. There is also then a low risk of thunderstorms in the north of Canterbury and the east of Marlborough as indicated on the chart.

Re: General September Weather
I'd be looking out for mid to late afternoon thunderstorms or hail in Canterbury tomorrow.

Re: General September Weather
Looks like lots of "critical SW" in the long range forecast. Southland, West coast and western NI coasts will have an especially vigorous couple of weeks coming up

Re: General September Weather
I'll be happy as long as the 2019/2020 thunderstorm season doesn't produce the long duration heavy intensity rain like that we had in Methven in December last year. The council drains stopped coping after 20 minutes and a lot of the businesses including mine had surface flooding through them.

Re: General September Weather
Yes. In saying this hoping no one gets affected by hail, cloudbursts etc, which is associated with the thunderstorms, but just to enjoy the enhancement that thunderstorm activity brings, ie lightning displays and cloud forms etc.snowykiwi wrote: ↑Mon 23/09/2019 14:11 I'll be happy as long as the 2019/2020 thunderstorm season doesn't produce the long duration heavy intensity rain like that we had in Methven in December last year. Yes, none damaging thunderstorms, thats what I like about where I am, no large hail and most storms come with light winds.

Re: General September Weather
MS seemed keen on a low risk today for mid Canterbury and same for North Canterbury tomorrow.
Pretty windy today in the usual places between Amberley and Chch. Nice and warm in town.

Re: General September Weather
A few storms/hail look likely up the east of the South Island tomorrow afternoon with convergence and orographic lift being the triggers. Moisture is not great but 700mb temps are very cold at -11C so some mid level CAPE develops with afternoon heating.

Re: General September Weather
Dewpoint is around 10C tomorrow and 500mb -25C so certainly a chance of isolated squally thunderstorms.

Re: General September Weather
It's quite surprising sometimes the difference with the NW'er, while you were getting gusts to 87 km/h it was only gusting to 17 km/h over here.

Re: General September Weather
I have seen gusts to 76 knots (140kmh) reported at the Signal station on the now casting this morning
And yet its only gusting to 30 to 35 knots in the Hauraki Gulf at the moment
its a classic pressure wind..a river of wind running down this side...ie the wind pressure has been building up...as the wind field has not expanded to the other side of the north island yet..once it does that it then eases a bit on this side

Big rain here all morning. Climbing quickly to 25mm now. Wasn’t expecting this much. No wind tho.
