Perfect reason to pull in and part up out the front with a shandy or two

A low pressure system developing to our north will give the North Island a wet week. And localised downpours/thunder developing in the far north later tomorrow or early Wednesday in areas exposed to NE.

Tonight’s run of EC now predicting 2-4cm of snow to sea level in Canterbury Sunday into Monday, kinda snuck up on it this one with all the SSW talk!

The weekend has been looking cold for a few days, Ben Noll and Chris Brandolino from NIWA we’re mentioning that in their outlook. Bitterly cold air coming up from due south.

this is the first ECMWF run to have this outcome. We need to keep tracking over the next few runs to see if there is any constency there, or just a rogue model run. Only a few of the ensemble members are currently showing snow to that level.

Kataia had a thunderstorm very early this morning with the PWS there getting over 25mm in an hour.

Looks like a trough line will be coming south later today but at this stage I think it is a just low thunder risk in Auckland. But I will be keeping an eye out.

Currently 995.1 hPa here. Interestingly the top of the NI at Cape Reinga is down to 985 hPa on the MS reading, that is 3 hPa lower than EC and 5 lower than the GFS 18Z projections.

edit: the low's circulation is moving slightly offshore on the west coast. Seems like it currently is deeper than expected. Might mean a tighter gradient for tomorrow night's south westerly wrap around into Auckland.
