Re: General September Weather
3.1C here at Thornbury now but that is about to change. Weather radar shows a band of showers in Foveaux Strait moving east so showers here soon and the wind will pick up. Ventusky shows average wind speed is 33 knots gusting 51 knots overnight Thursday as well as snow falling at midnight tomorrow .We will see .GFS indicates the 522 thickness line is either close to approaching Southland on their 00Z map tomorrow so the afternoon & evening could be quite interesting

Re: General September Weather
I see MS tweeted that Manukau Heads recorded a NW gust of 172 km/h at 8:30am yesterday morning - not sure if it peaked then though?
I was at a friends place in Surfdale when the SW change came through around 3pm along with a hugh gust that sent heavy deck furniture and large pot plants flying over the deck and blew off a wooden gate with part of its post still attached. Below are a few more of MS's higher gusts yesterday…

Re: General September Weather
if the showers can be convective enough then they can overcome the marine layer

Re: General September Weather
Had a loud rumble of thunder during milking tonight. First thunder I’ve heard in what seems a long time.

Re: General September Weather
Just had lightning hit something right outside my house. Crazy! Will go inspect what it’s hit in the morning.

Re: General September Weather
Well bugger! I’ve just noticed that I no longer have any wind measurements. Stopped at the same time as the lightning strike. After ten years of having essentially a lightning rod on a shed roof, wondering how it’s not been hit to this day, it’s finally happened I think. Can’t think of any other reason the wind would suddenly stop recording.jamie wrote:Just had lightning hit something right outside my house. Crazy! Will go inspect what it’s hit in the morning.

Re: General September Weather
Looks like an upper trough will cross the North Island Sunday pm or Monday am. A subtropical moisture feed possible with dp 13C so thunder potential for Northland/Auckland.

Re: General September Weather
Interesting. Noticed it was quite windy but nothing particularly unusual in Howick. Peak gust 60 kmh.

Re: General September Weather
I find it fascinating why the wind at ground level here is blowing right angles to the general wind direction.

Re: General September Weather
So the lightning hit a fence post on the farm. Done more electrical damage to houses half a km away than houses on the farm. Weird! Pics and post on Facebook.
Anyway I can’t work out why the connection between my consol and my anemometer dropped out at the moment the lightning hit and I can’t get them to pair up again. Any ideas? Being wireless on a shed roof it shouldn’t have been affected by the lightning strike that hit 100m away?

Re: General September Weather
there would have been a electromagnetic pulse that could have fried the circuit for the wireless connection I suggest

Re: General September Weather
Most likely the charge build-up (and upward streamers) before the strike destroyed it. The whole mast and roof would have been making a sizzling noise up to 20 seconds before the strike.

Is that wireless device the original one? Can't remember if you replaced it since.

Re: General September Weather
Thanks Will. Yea there has been a lot of electronic damage to peoples houses around here yet it hit our electric fence. Perhaps some other branches hit power lines and the shed roof too? Must have been a positive strike?
I’ll take the entire station into the shop for an inspection. Hopefully it’s a write off and I can claim insurance on a new one.
