Hey Tornado did you end up getting any hail  .
After a warm weekend and brilliant start to the week temperatures around 17C to 19C, Nelson has had another good drink.
35-40mm in some places, the rain in these complex lows tend to feed the top of the south fairly well.
Something they could of done with last summer.

EU rainfall forecast for the next 4 days. Unstable showery conditions with isolated thunderstorms for the north. Over 100mm likely for Coromandel/western BOP.

Wonder if this dust and smoke coming off Oz this morning will be visible here in coming days at sunrise and sunset?

Brother in Brisbane reckons its nearly bad enough to have the car lights going, he says it's coming and going though, quite thick one moment then clears away the next.

I see Sydney was up to 30C yesterday with blowing dust. That hotter airmass has generated elevated thunderstorms in the Tasman Sea.

The lightning is being triggered by a surge of warm air off Australia being driven by a jet stream. But the instability is weakening as it approaches the North Island.

Lightning probably will make it to west coast Auckland but Northland looks better placed as far as model output goes.

A bit hazy out there today. Either salt haze or Aussie dust haze. Probably the later.

Last time there was thunder overhead was early 2018, only distant lighting last spring/summer.

Very weak and uneventful change here. Hasn't even wet the ground properly. Spring looks very docile to start with round our hood

There have been a couple of quiet seasons for the Canterbury plains but law of averages should see it be active again very soon.

Yep I hope so, I reckon this SSW may bump up the chances more as the daytime heating starts to kick in, surly.
