I dont remember the SSW that year and what weather it subsequently delivered, I'd be interested if anyone could put up charts/grafts comparing it to the current SSW, and what extreme weather followed in the Southern hemisphere .

October for NZ - coldest since 1982, some noteworthy cold snaps, dry for most regions, record high sunshine.
October 1937 was rather similar but I have no idea what the general dynamics of the time were, other than that the SOI was generally neutral from then until May 1938. The temperature anomalies (against 1981-2010 average) were positive from Nov 1937 to May 1938, with steadily increasing excess warmth up to the then record-breaking April 1938 (2.42C above 1981-2010).

Here is the 2002 temp anomalies. Initial comparison with 2019 needs a few more days of data as it has only just commenced but I'll post it during next week.

In 2002, I chased a tornado in Halswell in "Jimmy" the Morris Minor, I had at the time.

Looking back at October 2002 via notable weather notes on Met Society newsletter, there were several cold snaps with hail and snow showers on the high country (though none reaching sea-level), and followed by unseasonable heavy frosts in places, affecting horticultural crops. Plus the system at the end of the month that brought the tornado to Taitapu.
October 2009 was even colder than 2002, though no SSW event. (?)

Locally I would gladly repeat Oct 2002 willingly over many of our typical Octobers - wind run lower with missing cloudy NWers.

which year was it that February was very stormy? it was around 2002/3?

I remember at the time they talked about Antartica sort of 'Flipping"

An extract from my weather diary Sunday 27th of October 2002.
I was in Somerfield, Christchurch at the time.

"Fine overnight with it becoming SW or WSW from about 6am-ish.
At 9am, it was 15C, fine but some low stratus moving NE to the west of here across the plains evetnually
From noon, that's when things changed.NE development causing a convergence line, west to east and becoming unstable looking, which congestus cloud forming into a glaciating Cb form which did produce a clap of thunder.
Large rain drops from the as i cloud,Then another CB form developed to the east of here over the Port Hills.
ENE winds becoming strongt flowed into the convergence. A second line of convergence forming near Tai Tapu with some funnel clouds and also out on the plains near West Melton. The Tai Tapu one I filmed on camera chasing it in Jimmy, the Morris Minor I had at the time.,
