Starting to look interesting on radar. Got some daytime warming going too so hopefully that helps, 17C at the moment.

It's pretty hard to visually sight what is going on through the Aussie dust / smoke haze. Around midday there were some tcu off to the north, and some ac out to the south east visible from Albany. Still plenty of water on the ground from a downpour around 8:30 ish this morning

A shame it mostly fizzled out as it crossed the main central part of the region. Looks like it might be intensifying again in south Auckland now

The sky was hazy again today. According to Weatherzone bushfire smoke has reached northern NZ.

That afternoon storm was very lightning active in the far west of the Auckland region but just a few strikes further east. I suppose with the surface NE that's not surprising. PWS along the west coast recorded up to 20mm from it. Just 4mm in Grey Lynn.

Some quite large hailstones reported in Whangarei according to this press report in The New Zealand Herald. Theses stones look to be in the 30-40mm range:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/arti ... d=12266146

This story appears to refer to the afternoon of Monday 9th September.

Re large hail

There was some wind shear yesterday so very likely some cork screwing of the storm updraughts to get the larger hail and more intense lightning.

thought I would re join, have missed being able to be part of the conversations :)
especially interesting this SSW event :)
We had a great thunderstorm here yesterday afternoon
actually we have had lots here over the last few days (some real good ones at night too, real close lightning and thunder)
the rain can stop now though!! (and I see we have a more typical weather pattern for the next week after today, whew)
