Agree, if its SW it can sometimes create a decent chain shower set up however.... WSW it goes out to sea. That's how i understand it anyway. I guess if the flow is straighter than or equal to the angle the SI is, then some showers will occur. Seems to be a few incoming atm.

Had about a 30-40 min period of snow here, slushy accumulation on the ground which was well wet from earlier rain. Seems to have stopped now.

IMO, small window for snow in Christchurch approaching from cold convection before the flow goes more SW. Currently temps around 2c with a 1c DP from what I can see.

You can see the flow going SW from about 3am on the merservice maps. Snowchaser WSW is no show for Canterbury. A SSW is what we want. I think thats what it is currently?

Second band of blue (on radar) moving onto Chch now. Not as big, but air has chilled down enough for at least sleet in the city.

Nice mammatus as the cloud moved NE over Geraldine about lunchtime and then moved over to the NE developing possibly further as it worked it's way north to produce a more colder cutting underneath with it resulting in the hail that Tony got plus a few strikes of lightning possibly around the Rakaia Gorge area?

+0.3°C, ground and roofs dappled with frozen snow. Very picturesque.
Sky mostly clear, a few low clouds to south-east and north-west.

As usual in these setups, a nonevent here - a brief squall around 10pm with a small amount of hail, 0.8mm at Kelburn. Clear this morning.

Similar in Kaikõura, mainly some gale strength gusts and some brief heavy rain as the rain component of the cold front came through late at night. Back to a beautiful day today.
