Overcast in Auckland this morning but a fine day coming up.

On the topic of convection, some low topped thunder/hail on the cards for eastern Otago/South Canterbury tomorrow afternoon.

Do you all think we will get anymore thunder in auckland or will we just get blocking highs to stop the wet weather ftom coming here for the rest of the year?

I think we should get 2 to 3 thunder days before Christmas. It tends to be after Christmas when the convection can really shut down for several months due to dominant high pressure.

Went bush walking in Hunua ranges this morning. Very evident there have some strong winds there recently, with multiple trees fallen across the track. One in particular was snapped clean off at the trunk - must have been a violent wind gust to do that!

I agree with you. just like from jan -22 april cause day after the 22nd the draught of thunder did finally broke. so even if we do get thunder this december it wont be a lot like last december but we may still get some.

I wish to be at the western south island right now as there has currently been thunderstorms there.

Must have been wind going over the Kaimais making a standing wave pattern. The wind did hit us out there a bit later, then dropped to nothing then got up again.
Warm day over that way, see Whakatane got to 27. Got to 23 back here in Cambridge. See the GFS has backed off from predicting 29 for here, 31 for Taupo area next Monday. Would have to check CLIFO, but pretty sure have never seen temps like that so early in November in the Central North Island.

You don't to have fireworks for Guy Fawkes night. You get lots more natural fireworks in the sky than what we get down here :-$

hmm weat coast south island has been getting the natural fireworks (thunderstorms) for most of the day. eased earlier but starting up again according to blitz. we wont have thunder here in auckland due to the large incoming high.

Yes. A few lightning strikes on the West Coast moving north but fading out by now.
Sadly moving away, so no flashes to the west this evening which I was looking forward too.
Yes. I see more flashes this evening, way to the SW.

No comments on Tuesdays thunder set up from Canterbury folk? Airmass is certainly cold 500mb-30C and unstable tomorrow with a good chance of hail.

Auckland looking largely dry for the next week but for some weak precip with tonights front.

Was looking at Tuesday as far back on Friday thinking it was looking a possibility, this morning is still -30 500mb over a wide area of northern SI, come on drought breaker.

Agree NZStorm and Richard, was mentioning this to Mike last night. Would like it if the change was a little later in the afternoon but the upper air is very cold as you say.

Fingers crossed.

A few ominous looking clouds going up down here with a bit of a southerly breeze.
Might be a small thunderstorm near Oamaru?

Been up to 24c in Christchurch today but now a lot of dark clouds and a spot of rain. Was hoping for a little thunder but nothing so far.
