Quite pleasant temps last few days. Westerly change in the last hour has pushed the temp up 3 degrees to almost 22 again.

I would like to join you guys if the thunderstorm potential was more south than the where thunderstorm potential looks likely.

Some nice clouds about as said earlier this evening. Hanging around the plains and port hills of chch. Weak but good signs that we are getting close to a good storm day down this way!

Altocumulus asperatus. You get that look when relatively warmer moist air is sitting over a cooler layer.

that is a very slow moving and large low pressure system way to the east of NZ
that's a lucky miss
there has been a few of those lately and the models show another one to form way to the east
maybe related to the upsetting of the jet streams etc by the SSW?

high cloud with a jet stream is to blame for that, but that is slowly moving east...can see blue skies to my west

will NZ as a whole average wise end up being below the 0.5c threshold to make it the first colder than normal month in a long time?
(NI is average to above, but SI east coast has a few pocket areas over 1c below average)

your YTD rain total seems too low?
and your october average you say is 99mm? that seems to be too high..how long is your records for?
for me 88mm is around the average for October (which is what I ended up with here)

Year to date is spot on and similar to nearby locations. North of the harbour up to Northland had it's driest start on record for the first 6 months which NIWA and MS talked in detail about recently.

My average is taken from data going back to 2001. NIWA's published 1980 -2010 mean for Auckland is 100.2 mm

interesting, I thought Auckland had more than that year to date but looking now I see you are right , other stations are still below 800mm YTD
I must have picked up a lot more spring rain here then
That means Auckland might be heading for its driest year on record (depending on what happens next 2 months)

and I just re checked my Oct average, its 95mm so I was a bit wrong there (that is for average data going back to the 1960's)

My davis rain guage is on a very low 617.2mm YTD. This day last year it was on 1008mm. I am questioning whether it has missed some rain. Every time I visit where it is I check and clean it, have found a few bits and pieces but never enough that it wound have blocked it and allowed the cone to overflow. The reed switch seems to be fine.
