Seems it was a local event ?
Strong NW here also, Arrived around 6.30/7am along with some brief spillover rain, Fine and warm now with 27c.
Good double rainbow with the spillover, then
Went for a drive up the Downs, noticed a lot of leaves and twigs around the place.
...was expecting more due to the severity of the wind, especially the initial gusts which were very strong, especially here.
No newspaper this morning as it probably blew away and one of the panels of the glasshouse came off.
The umbrella over our outside furniture came off and landed next door.
I don't know if any trampolines were hurled away by the wind gusts.
Definitely the strongest gusts that I've experienced here, nearly as strong as the big wind we experienced in 2013 at West Melton where we lost 7 50 year pine trees from the NW. 8-o

Certainly some big totals coming for the top of the south, right in the moist feed zone overnight.
Nelson could see around 120mm between 7pm tonight and 4pm tomorrow, with bigger totals around the ranges possibly tipping 200mm.
Thunderstorms in the mix as well i would say.
Steady showers filtering in this morning already, and 17C.
The last few days have been abit muggy, yesterday was 21C with 70% humidity.
Some lower level cloud breaking to mid level CU and instability at times and the odd spot if rain.
Im dubious on the airport weather station site for nelson, the readings are taken too close to the ocean where local sea breezes tend to take over.
A true reading would be in central nelson, and one in Richmond.
Is there any links to weather station readings up here that anyone knows of?

It has not reached up here yet, sky very blue between some scattered cumulus. Feels like the tropics with a warm breeze and a moderate amount of humidity. Image

Blustery northerly wind here; sky overcast with a bronzey cast to the west.
Light seems quite dull actually.

^ saw a similar effect on Sunday February 8 2009, due to Victorian bushfires.
Also during solar eclipses.
Quite uncanny.

Meanwhile on Waiheke Island it's been a settled day, pretty clear when the sun came out. Looks wet up here tomorrow.

Less population down there whereas Auckland might be a different story, maybe?

Certainly wet on the Coast. Cropp and Styx gauges have both tipped out over 800mm this week, and more to come
