yes, 0-6km shear was non existent today which is the best number for assessing severe weather potential. The higher anvil level flow there today is useful for venting storms, which reduces the downdraft but you need good mid level flow to tilt a storm.Tornado Tim wrote: ↑Fri 29/11/2019 10:09 Low to mid level flow/shear is non-existent today, upper flow is a bit more favorable which should create a bit more divergence (and therefor more lift). Upper level temps however are on the increase today.
I would expect storms fizzing fairly quickly, and have a typical multi-cell pulsy nature where quite a bit of rain is dumped.

I see on Weatherzone Sydney will get its warmest November on record with an average daily max of 26.7C. I had a quick look at some NZ numbers and Gisborne is looking like an average daily November max of 24.1C, undoubtedly a record. No doubt there will be new records all over NZ.

Cropp Waterfall ending the month with 1893mm (little or none expected for the rest of the day), the highest November total since 2006 - but well short of 1994's 2603mm.

Re: General November Weather
Close. Gisborne Aero's highest Nov mean T-Max is 24.2C set in 1982 for records from 1937. So Gisborne Aero would need at least 26.0C today to equal that monthly record.NZstorm wrote: ↑Sat 30/11/2019 13:35 I see on Weatherzone Sydney will get its warmest November on record with an average daily max of 26.7C. However, NIWA's daily T-max on Nov 2nd for Gisborne Aero is currently 2.0C higher than MS has for that day, which would mean that this Nov may have just equalled its 1982 record…
Edit: NIWA's T-max for Nov '2nd' looks to have been taken just before 9am on the 3rd. So they'll base this month's mean T-max on that higher 9am reset figure.

Re: General November Weather
In our hood it was a very warm month (well over 2 degrees above average) and punctuated by those severe thunderstorms which provided the basis for near average rainfall. It would have been a dry month without them with drought conditions looming otherwise that's for sure.
Half the month exceeded T-Max 25 degrees, not bad going for November!

The low rainfall of Nov 2019 now puts November as the driest month of the year in my averages starting 10 years ago, with a mean monthly rainfall of 64mm (vs 68mm for Feb)

Re: General November Weather
It’s my dirtiest too. Is this a new trend or is it historically a low rainfall month for some areas.David wrote:The low rainfall of Nov 2019 now puts November as the driest month of the year in my averages starting 10 years ago, with a mean monthly rainfall of 64mm (vs 68mm for Feb)

Re: General November Weather
there has been some very dry Novembers in the Auckland area in the past (as in way back in the 70's and 60's)
i.e like a total of only a few mm's
old timers talk about dairy farmers being on once a day milking and no hay or silage made at all in November in some years way back in the 60's/70's

Re: General November Weather
These are the November totals at the former Owairaka site during the 60s and 70s... the only year that stands out in terms of dryness is 1974. Quite a few over 100mm in there - the mean for the 20 years shown is 91mm. But I suppose there's always the local variation tooAwhituobs wrote: ↑Sun 01/12/2019 14:03 there has been some very dry Novembers in the Auckland area in the past (as in way back in the 70's and 60's)

Jeffs weather station average maximum temperature of 23.6 was 1.8 degrees above Melbournes 21.8. I wonder how often that happens.

I would compare Mebourne Airport to Christchurch Airport. Airports tend to operate to the same standard of exposure. Both sites are inland so worthy of comparison.

I've seen Jeff's set up many years ago and it was in a very urban environment compared to the AWS at Harewood.

Re: General November Weather
November here was quite warm especially earlier in the month where the month's maximum of 33C was recorded on Saturday the 2nd.
The months minimum was 2.2C on the morning of the 15th.
49.5mm of rain was recorded at this site.
Luckily no hail was recorded here, but we did have one clap of thunder which heralded a brief cloud burst later in the afternoon of the Timaru Hailstorm.

A very warm start to an exceptionally warm November. Fairly wet around the West Coast, Fiordland and parts of Otago, but otherwise quite dry for most areas. Also cloudy for the West Coast, but otherwise very sunny for most of NZ, particularly for the North island.

Re: General November Weather
It’s also largely to do with the distribution through the month. Low rainfall for the last 2 weeks of October and nothing until the end of November would make a very dry November but the weather data shows otherwise. And that goes for any months. So the old timers will be right and some of this data will be hiding some dry November’s.Awhituobs wrote:re nov dry...might need to go back to the 50's...I can't remember now what the ol timers told me lol
