Gully......take the Gentle Annie from taihape to Napier. You won’t be disappointed.

On a storm note the sky here has many classic early morning hall marks of an unstable sky and a thundery afternoon on the way. Fingers crossed I get a 50mm dump of rain. We need it badly.

That looks like an epic route. On second thought I won't have enough time to deviate that far, hopefully I can catch a storm on the Hawkes Bay side of the ranges.

The visibility today due to the bush fires is absolutely terrible, I'm starting to reconsider whether it is worth going...

Low to mid level flow/shear is non-existent today, upper flow is a bit more favorable which should create a bit more divergence (and therefor more lift). Upper level temps however are on the increase today.
I would expect storms fizzing fairly quickly, and have a typical multi-cell pulsy nature where quite a bit of rain is dumped.
Hail more probable the sooner the storms develop.

See what can happen when the convergence gets going this afternoon.

Fine warm humid conditions here, Cbs visible to the north and south. http://www.sitecam.co.nz/auckland_webcam/desktop.html

I see the first storm of the day has been over the Coromandel Ranges.

No shear there today so storms are the pulse type.
