I’m up at the adventure park in cashmere. The valley misses a lot of wind and it’s absolutely scorching. Jeff’s 35c seems not far off imho

Re: Early Hot November Weather
With the cloudless skies, zooming in using the Himawira 8 infrared is interesting today. It's currently showing one of the hottest skin surface temperatures across all of NZ is the rocky volcanic eastern side of Mt Ruapehu next to it's snowcap. About 10km and 1500m height difference between the extremes.

Re: Early Hot November Weather
I'd believe that'
Would be like Geraldine yesterday.
I've seen Jeff's station, well it was many years ago. Sort of in a heat urban island. It's bit like that here.
It's a wonder NIWA hasn't come up with it's Riccarton reading ?

Only 22.4C here. I expect tomorrow will beat that, but probably only by around 1C

Max 24C at Ardmore Airport but only 18C at Auckland Airport which gets the SW straight off the Harbour.

Re: Early Hot November Weather
Those temperatures simular up here in Nelson today in terms of variancy.
I was around at the Pelorous river today for lunch and a few chilly swims in the river, it was 27C there according to car temp ( surprisingly accurate).
Back in Nelson 17C was the hottest it got, predicted high of 26C.
No onshore sea breeze just a light westerly this morning and when i got back late afternoon.
I cant recall such a hot start to November, and especially going from 18C to 23C highs across the country to 30C to 34C in such a short time.

Re: Early Hot November Weather
Apparently there was a reading of 34.3C recorded somewhere here in Geraldine yesterday, which could be true reading
I noticed that Kawerau bet that by 34.6C today.

Re: Early Hot November Weather
CWU's claim in Stuff that their 'official' Geraldine reading of 34.3C (or 34.6C on their Facebook page) on Saturday was 'officially' NZ's 3rd highest ever Nov temp is probably about as absurd as saying that Jeff's 35.4C in Chch yesterday is now 'officially' NZ's 2nd highest ever Nov temp.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Sun 03/11/2019 23:31Apparently there was a reading of 34.3C recorded somewhere here in Geraldine yesterday, which could be true reading

Re: Early Hot November Weather
I think the Coleridge record of 35.6C in 1920 looks doubtful. I don't recall seeing it comparing "well" with the usual suspects in hot Canterbury events.
Edit: from 1921 yearbook, max. November 1920 temperatures at a couple of sites were 28.4C at Ch'ch and 32.2C at Timaru. In January 1956 Coleridge had a maximum of 36.1C which was higher than at many sites but way short of Ashburton's 38.4C. On 7/2/1973, it only got to 33.3C, well short of many eastern region readings.

Re: Early Hot November Weather
The aim of recording temperature is to capture a reading that represents the suburb/district rather than the back yard. It very hard to find the right exposure for measuring temperature in towns/cities.

Re: Early Hot November Weather
Definitely a hot day in Amberley, weather underground has 26 but to me it feels hotter than that. Very little wind.

Re: Early Hot November Weather
Wow mine has hit 29.1 ( caveat-passive screen only). Yesterday by comparison under full sun and little wind max was 26 so warmer today. Hamilton airport looks like it has exceeded 27 or so.

Re: Early Hot November Weather
Hottest spot I can see in the country was Whakatanae airport on 32C.
Auckland airport only 20C today while Ardmore airport 15km away 26C. Whenuapai 24C.

Re: Early Hot November Weather
Warm down here today but not cracking the thirty degrees mark.
Much better than the previous 2 days of sweltering weather.
Noted today when I went for a drive that some tar has melted on the road, which made the truck really noisy after coming off a shingly road.

Did an oil change on my car this evening, was extremely hot leaning over the engine. Didn't realise it was still 29°C at 6pm.

Re: Early Hot November Weather
Heat ridge moving away now but could see 27C in parts of Auckland like Clevedon and Henderson now that the SW has dropped away.

Re: Early Hot November Weather
Read 29C on the car themometer yesterday leaving Amberley at teatime, and 21C in Chch. It was a perfect weather day for me in Amberley, fantastic heat and a nice gentle breeze to move the air around just enough.
