New Delhi Air Quality

Unread post by Willoughby »

The winter-time high over the subcontinent and associated low-level inversions are starting to play havoc with India's air quality in the northern lowlands.

Do they have any wind there?
I don't know the area but the pollution there seems to be higher than what Christchurch had in the winters leading up to the 1950's, 1960's etc>

Some of the pictures are not pleasant - the density of the haze is akin to fog at times. The problem seems to be numerous sources for the particulates from cars, industry, domestic heating + cooking and crop stubble burning in and around Delhi.

They are trying limiting car use, but this may not be enough. The UK had terrible problems with smog in its major cities many years ago, and the passing of the Clean Air Act in 1968 has made a huge difference, although the UK does have the benefit of a persistent (usually) wind to blow the problem away. That said, UN pollution limits are still exceeded occasionally in the UK when calm conditions persist.

With the number of people in Delhi and scarce resource, this will not be an easy problem to fix.
