Re: General December Weather
Just took a look at the radar and it sure is wet central north island. i wish that rain would come here but nope we have the big summer dry and rain/thunder draught starting again. no rain for auckland for the rest of december (2019) and I suspect janurary will be dry?

The Bay of Plenty Kiwi fruit vines getting a good drink tonight. No development near Auckland today, I see Hamilton has stayed dry.

Re: General December Weather
Cold upper air lingering over the country today so more afternoon convection inland although there is not much CAPE around. A shortwave crossing Otago this afternoon is good timing.

TV3 reported during there news that Oamaru had 56mm of rain yesterday but on the MS website I see 7.4mm, not sure where they got the 56mm from.

So, I hadn't sandbagged downstairs (on what has become a flood plain since 2004 with the infill housing being developed around here). Luckily we dodged a bullet... Not far from here it was a lot heavier for long enough to flood here. I was elsewhere returning from largely a bust.

Re: General December Weather
Yes, 7.4mm for Oamaru township and 53.6mm at Oamaru Aero about 17.5 km further up the coast yesterday morning (including 17.4mm in the hour to 9am). Unfortunately, Oamaru Aero is another one of those many sites no longer included on MS's new website.

Re: General December Weather
Tomorrows front is very brief and generally coastal, Otago and Southland are the spots for the best convection.
However the instability does carry on up the coastline to banks peninsula around 10pm with the surface SW change, the upper jet is strong north of Ashburton so may help with forcing.
The odd CB up the coastline fringes at night cant be ruled out, hail up to 20mm.
Look south tomorrow night for a night time display.
Brief heavy showers due through the rest of the plains overnight.

Re: General December Weather
That will probably help to keep December as the wettest month of the year at Oamaru Aero (1981-2010) when the 30-year means get updated.

Yes, looking like a decent polar trough moving through.Storm Struck wrote: ↑Thu 26/12/2019 14:14 Tomorrows front is very brief and generally coastal, Otago and Southland are the spots for the best convection.

Looks stable in Auckland out to mid January, so fairly boring pattern here.

Re: General December Weather
Southland radar looks pretty active at the moment. Metservice have the moderate risk up to about Timaru which makes sense. Still hopeful of the unexpected further north tonight. I recall a nighttime storm in winter out of nothing a couple of years ago so it's possible!

Just had a thunderstorm pass over Mosgiel, Dunedin. Quite active lightning and thunder. No hail.

Re: General December Weather
Quite a bit of lightning being driven by a 130knot polar jet. We have to wait until May before we can get a set up like that over Auckland!
The temperature at Dunedin Airport is now 12C after a 20C high.

Re: General December Weather
Strong sustained winds here in Lyttelton with some very strong gusts. Think that jet has to be enhancing the surface winds.
Edit - there's a tree down at the bottom of the road, not that surprising.

Re: General December Weather
Heres an article about the thunderstorms in dunedin this afternoon. apparently lightning struck a house and knock out power.
