Nice, i am training to be a DOC ranger at the moment and one of the guys on my course Nik is working in that area as part of our work summer placement.
You may come across him.

Theres a real stubborn convergence about today, wind is breezy Northerly here in Kaiapoi and mild, but ive just come from eastern Christchurch where its a cold strong NE.
New Years day looks like a schorcher 34C possible for some parts of even the city, as winds look to be very light from the Northerly quarter for the coast.
More NE on the peninsula, and NW inland 35C not out of question for other inland spots.
A relieving although dry southerly change in the evening.

When is this blardy wind due to piss off? It’s as annoying as watching the black caps in that Boxing Day test.

The smoke coming across the Tasman will knock the temps back from what was predicted down the bottom of the SI today

It was sitting at 30 for a bit.

MS's 30.2C at Invercargill Aero yesterday would be Invercargill's third highest 'official' Dec temp after a couple of older sites on the eastern side the Waihopai recorded 31.1C in 1940 and 30.6C in 1924. :-)

A sunny end to December completed a year with just above recorded (manual reading - the partial record for the new AWS data would suggest a value of at least 2350), the best (just above 2015) since 2008. That's less impressive than it sounds since the "decade" had plenty of below-par years - 2010, 2011, 2012 averaging 120 hours below the 1981-2010 mean, and 2016, 2017, 2018 averaging 175 hours below that mean.

December 2019 was fairly cool and wet for the most of the South Island, apart from some eastern areas. In contrast the North Island was generally warm, and still fairly dry in the upper and lower North Island, except for Wellington and some central areas. Above normal sunshine for most, except for the SE of the South Island.

NIWA summary for 2019 from Stuff today.

Temperatures
Auckland: 14.8C | 0.4C above average
Tauranga: 16C | 1.1C above average, warmest on record
Hamilton: 14.4C | 0.8C above average
Wellington: 13.6C (with one day of data missing) | 0.7C above average
Christchurch: 12.3C | 0.7C above average
Dunedin: 11.8C | 0.7C above average, equal 2nd warmest on record

Sunshine
Auckland: 2496 hours
Tauranga: 2494 hours
Hamilton: 2245 hours (with two days of data missing)
Wellington: 2207 hours
Christchurch: 2285 hours
Dunedin: 208 hours (with two days of data missing)

NIWA say 1096mm in 48hours on the West Coast was the weather event of the year. But I believe the Canterbury November hail storm was the biggest weather event of 2019.

The Auckland temperature figure is wrong. The mean temperature is higher the 14.4C.

Yes Akld's 2019 mean-temp should be 15.8C (0.4C above normal), as per NIWA's '2019 Annual Climate Summary' out today - New Zealand’s 4th-warmest year on record.

See two sites near me, Cambridge golf course and Lake Karapiro recorded just ~750 and 700mm respectively. So my Davis recorded 734.2mm for the year is entirely feasible.
