The bridge at Arundel is also closed so there's no detour available.

Some crazy totals for the coast alright, that front is on the top of the souths doorstep.
Currently cloudy in nelson with low level but sun breaking through at times, so should lift once the front arrives and 20C on 88% humidity.
Thunder risk up here today and most of tomorrow, will be some healthy totals for sure.
Considering Nelson only got 10mm the other day, we need it up here dont want a repeat of last summer.

Bridge itself looks OK in this pic, but approach from the south where Razor's photos from is the problem:

Just had the most amazing and bizarre thunder ive ever heard, it was over head and quickly followed a bright flash, it was not just one boom but a cluster of booms like at a fireworks display

Interesting to see a state of emergency called over the Rangitata, meanwhile on the other side of the island...

Can we change the title to include today, it's the same overall system after all. What a huge amount of rain.

Hope it all eases quickly enough around the Rangitatam must be wild on the coast, those photos are amazing.

Just come back from Waimate.
Lovely day here today compared to overnight.
Lots of thunder resulting from bright lightning flashes overnight and early this morning with the last rumble heard about 7am this morning.
Didn't get much sleep so should sleep good tonight.

Would have loved to get closer to that storm firing over Geraldine / near you John on Friday night, or even over to the West Coast but I'm much too tired at the moment with a few projects on the go. Went up Kennedy's Bush Rd with Steve and saw some lightning but despite being frequent on the tracker, from our point of view it wasn't very frequent. The lightning was quite distant and had an orange tinge to it.

Best I managed.

Good, that the internet is back on after some optic fibre cables got damaged by the Rangitata floodwaters
Yes talking to Bob last night, he said he heard no thunder but he had reports of people who did.
The thunderstorm we had here was fantastic. Just lying in bed with the curtains drawn and watching all the action from bed.
I've heard of "Arm-chair" chasing but lying in bed and watching a thunderstorm. would you call that chasing?? [-X :-k

Probably from the smoke in the atmosphere.
