It did look from the metservice 3-day rain forecast map that there was a stationary front or convergence of some sort due to hit South Canterbury yesterday, CV so I'm glad it produced the goods!

I see the strong spillover activity extends to today as even a low risk of thunderstorms extends to Chch.

I would be surprised if Christchurch does not get thunder today.

Latest lightning chart shows activity extending out to sea.

This mornings MS Thunderstorm Outlook has something you dont see very often, a high risk of severe for Buller and western Nelson.

Moderate risk for this eastern side which give me hope

Clearing up here now with the sun coming out. Easily the longest period of Thunder ive ever heard, pretty much continuous since 5.30 yesterday.
Short video of some lightning at 4am this morning after being woken up by some of the loudest thunder ive ever heard.

Cropp waterfall now up to 1600mm for the week. 2 rogue upper polar charged streamers are playing a nice cameo with this intensely unstable set up. The SSW flow on affects are still in full swing. I'd say EC & GFS underestimated the strength of the jet at the start of the week, part of the reason they are going to miss the rainfall target by about +1000mm
