Re: Smoke from over the ditch
The layer of smoke has been lower down south than here all day as seen on the Glentaner webcam. Spoke to a lady in Queenstown early this morning after she sent a video of the lake, even then the smoke was half way down mountains. Just noticed 10 min ago the smoke layer is lowering around the mountains here now.
Mods- there's smoke related posts in January weather than should be in here, but then this thread should be in off topic's really because its not weather related.

We have the most amazing sun setting right now. It’s a colour I’ve never seen before. Can’t get a photo to show it well enough on my phone.

Re: Smoke from over the ditch
It was like that for a good part of the day down here, even with some rain and a change in the wind direction Was in K-Mart this afternoon and the smell was strong in there, I presume it was something to do with their ventilation...

I have not been able smell it, probably just me as others have been saying they can.

Smoke from over the ditch
Smokey here to low levels. Mixed with the fog it looks. Very dirty fog.

Re: Smoke from over the ditch
The red smoke filter had arrived yesterday afternoon here. This morning it's worse, but I doubt as bad as further South. The situation is Terrible in Australia, I do hope it improves sooner than later.

Thick layer of smoke above Auckland blocking the sun above a scattered layer of stratocucmulus.

Re: Smoke from over the ditch
It's a little better down this way today.
Smell is still quite strong, which started yesterday afternoon, but the visible smoke is less.
I can actually see blue sky today and I can see actual colours instead of everything being reddy brown.

Re: Smoke from over the ditch
Yeah yesterday was a shocker, no smell till late in the day. Typically when I'm off for a run, def could feel it in the throat afterwards.

Re: Smoke from over the ditch
The sunshine here today is weak with an orange hue and no blue in the sky, an overcaste day due to smoke.

We had rain yesterday afternoon and I think that cleaned the skies a bit.

Sunset from Wellington on Tuesday evening. This was as the band of smoke was just starting to hit the country. 60x optical zoom, but no filters used at all.

Re: Smoke from over the ditch
Wow, brave man, I'd have been too concerned about damaging my sensor to try that (without ND filters). Well done though, nice photo's.BeaconHill wrote: ↑Thu 02/01/2020 15:13 Sunset from Wellington on Tuesday evening. Re: Smoke from over the ditch
The smell of smoke was in my house when I woke yesterday morning and I spent some moments considering how molecules from Australia have crossed that distance to be inhaled by me.
It makes the world seem profoundly connected.

Enjoyed the blue skies and a swim earlier that day - little or no respite from staining since.BeaconHill wrote: ↑Thu 02/01/2020 15:13 Sunset from Wellington on Tuesday evening. This was as the band of smoke was just starting to hit the country. 60x optical zoom, but no filters used at all.

Re: Smoke from over the ditch
North Island looks to be in line to receive the bulk of the smoke from yesterday's fires.
