yes I noticed that. there is a band of smoke going over us at the moment. so that is the reason why.

We captured this image from the METEOR M2 Satellite at 0940 this morning. It is so dark here that I've got the lights on in the kitchen and looking out at the windows, there is a yellow glow. It is like looking at a monitor with a faulty contrast. The birds think it is evening.

I was outside in garden about 3pm and suddenly smelt smoke like there was a fire a km or two away. Have not smelt it since.

Nice and fine down here today.
You guys up north must be experiencing what we had on New Years Day.
Yes we had the lights on in the afternoon when daylight was dim from the smoke above.

Just had a break in the clouds. The sun was totally orange and I could look straight at it, easily.

From Molesworth cob cottage (Awatere Flats), 890m asl, on New Year's Day looking at the sun approx 6-7pm:

That's a cell phone photo, I got some zoomed-in on my digital camera and I'll see about posting one of those as well.

The next evening it was just as thick but lower down and easy to smell.

That is amazing that it would make it that far. I see today the more resent smoke is being blown NW up into the interior

Yes, the jet streams are moving the smoke efficiently but it shows how thick the smoke must of been for particles to still be visible on satellite imagery 13,000km away.

What next - the smoke comes full circle and is visible in Australia.

Refering to the sat picture . Brazil has a similar smoke problem to Australia though mostly man made as they log and burn to create more grazing land may be wrong but just my thoughts . Same would apply to Indonesia at times. I was in north Vietnam 6 months ago and it was very bad there. You would assume though the smoke would reach South America it would no longer be so defined.?

I've been seeing what looks like smoke very high in the sky during morning and evening twilight over the last week or so. It seems to be most visible with the sun just below the horizon when it shows up with a very faint wispy texture or ripples. About a week ago I was out walking at about 9.30 pm and the evening twilight was definitely brighter and more colourful than usual. It makes me wonder if there is enough up there now to cause some cooling, thinking back to the winter that followed Mt Pinatubo's eruption. Of course Pinatubo was a much larger event in terms of what it put into the stratosphere, but even so, it'll be interesting to see if there's enough smoke up there now to have any kind of cooling effect over coming months, even if a very slight one.

Perhaps we can fix global warming by burning all our forests, the Aussies might be on to something! o_O

High-altitude smoke quite obvious again in last night's twilight, especially in the first few minutes straight after sunset. It definitely reminds me of the sunsets I saw after the Pinatubo eruption (betraying my age here).
