Smoke from over the ditch
Noticing this year, like today the smoke is at ground level where past years it often comes over quite high up meaning the mountains remain clear. Wondering if the reason for this that the intense fires push the smoke high where the fires of late are not so much, or is there another reason.?

Definitely very hazy around the CBD and to the south of Christchurch City at the moment from the bush-fires in Aussie.

Re: Smoke from over the ditch
Talking to Richard today.
I wonder if the smokey skies up there has to do with the thunderstorm activity down here today.
I notice that the thunderstorm line is very slow moving hence the thunderstorm activity here today?

Re: Smoke from over the ditch
Smoke haze was extreme across Banks peninsula yesterday. We were walking the hilltops from Adderley Head to Diamond Harbour and the haze was so thick you couldn't even see the coast behind Godley Head. At times there was a faint smell of smoke too. Certainly not from any local fires either, this enveloped the whole sky.

Flew up to Wellington yesterday.
Very smoky skies from Timaru to Wellington with a rather red sunset last night from here at Belmont.

I certainly noticed that in Akaroa. And smelt smoke for a while, though that was from a controlled fire near the town.

Re: Smoke from over the ditch
Smoke seems higher up this morning compared to a few weeks ago as the mountains are still reasonably clear. No cloud, all smoke, suns kind of showing with very little shadows - eerie
