I wouldn't take the terms too seriously. Sometimes the best storms occur on a perceived low risk set up. I am not being critical of Met Service just making a point that nature does what it likes regardless of forecasts.

Bucketing down here now, no lightning as yet but will be some healthy totals here today.
Wind switch from NE to NW, and 17C.
Looks to be a storm south of Wakefeild though.

Jason could you please edit your location and signature to reflect your new location - its a bit confusing for people to see that its bucketing down from Rolleston when in fact its a fine day.Storm Struck wrote: ↑Sun 08/12/2019 12:37 Bucketing down here now, no lightning as yet but will be some healthy totals here today.

I ditched hanging out with my friend yesterday for the thunderstorms in Wellington LOL but then I went and picked him up again and he enjoyed chasing with me.

On the 1.30pm water vapour image , an upper polar injected streamer is coming into position over the Tasman from origins of around 66 degrees south. It's not too far away from interacting with sub-tropical rich moisture. It's not surprising that MS are openly reinforcing the risk of tornadoes.

Nothing really to see in these parts so far. Heating not as good as yesterday, a lot of cloud cover now

Latest EC 18Z producing an intense highly charged squall line converging on Auckland around midnight. It may not verify but its certainly an unstable set up for parts of the NI tonight.

Just had the full show come right over. Continuos thunder, some torrential rain and hail to finish. Stepped out too quick after the rain stopped and got a fright from a close lightning bolt.

T Cu line over Auckland currently, perhaps South Auckland is favoured for a few heavy showers from the line with more heat down there. The convergence is running south into Waikato and producing the odd thunderstorm down there.

Looks to be a storm south of Wakefeild though.
The heavy rain was brief here so a mere 7mm, not enough to prepare for the summer heat ahead.
Sun now making an appearance as the main band shifts north.
