Settled back down this afternoon, but it's clear that the volcano is still capable of doing whatever it wants, whenever it feels like doing it.

Yep, that's for sure. Another round of volcanic tremor during today which has just eased again. A significant tropical fed rain event in the next month that spills into the vent will make things interesting in it's current state.

More short sharp quakes than tremor now showing. Might be a sign of something happening?

Interesting, though I notice the epicentres have been located some kilometers SW of the island.

Thinking tectonic swarm at this point. They are focused a good 10km or more from White Island, with magnitudes up to 3.9. Won't know for sure until Geonet makes some comment

Whakaari/White Island: Update #20
Whakaari/White Island remains in an elevated state of unrest. Lava is now visible in the vents created by the eruption.

Since downpours in the area in the last few days, I've noticed minor increases in volcanic tremor levels, especially in the last 8 hours.

Did she just clear her throat? Looks like a big increase in glow in the 9pm image.

Following image now up & even better, is that lava movement? (Magma below, lava above ground).

Still can't tell & about to head to work. Only thing I came up with was steam obstructing the cameras view of the glow hence varying. Didn't seem to be lava movement over time. Be interesting to see once it has sufficent light, if you can see through the ash on the enclosure. In any case, with a glow like that, it's a lot of heat.

Whakaari current showing a stronger volcanic tremor in the last few hours and why volcanic alert level 2 remains in place.

It had settled down for about 18 hours (quieter than it had been in a while), but is starting to tremor a bit again.

been 6 months since it erupted. so now the survivors have to deal with that memory and covid 19 pandemic. there was a quake around there yesterday. according to media. but they said it might of been seismic not volcanic.

They dropped White Island/Whakaari back to Level 1 Tue 16th Jun leaving the Aviation alert at Yellow. On Mon 22nd of June they also reduced Aviation alert to Green. Curiously there seems to have been a tremor event over night, It will be interesting to see if they issue an Alert Bulletin for it.

Still not sure what to make of the drums on White Island/Whakaari, don't think it's wind, unless it is only when it's from a particular direction.

According to GeoNet, there were 3 tremors about 5 km deep within a few km of White Island yesterday morning (although their epicentres do have a margin of error up to 5-6 km):

M2.9, 4.1 km NW of Crater at 8:42am
M3.3, 1.7 km NW of Crater at 8:45am
M3.1, 2.6 km NW of Crater at 9:06am

There was also another little cluster on Oct 5th about 6-8 km to its SW.

I see GNS Science, along with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), today acknowledged they were among the 10 organisations and 3 individuals that Worksafe NZ today has laid criminal charges against over the Whakaari/White Island eruption.

I wonder if this could set a precedent, e.g. could weather forecasters be held liable for failing to predict the extent of the recent flooding in Napier, and to a lesser extent the flooding in Plimmerton?
