Rain now light to moderate locally, gusty NNE wind. That snaking convergence zone in the west of Auckland now has a PWS at Waiatarua on 139mm for the day. EC was projecting 10 to 15mm for them

Starting to think we'll be lucky to make 15mm, looking at the radar :(
Hopefully I'm proved wrong

15mm here....another painful 2019 day of just missing a convergence zone but I'm happy to get some rain. Huge numbers west and north west of here, multiple PWS 100mm+ locations. Access R the only model to pick up the intensity of the convergence but projected it slightly more east than where it unloaded.

I wonder if the tornado in waikato was a actual tornado or just a big wind gust. Tornadoes were mentioned in their thunderstorm outlooks for today but also wind gusts were mentioned. witness says that they saw a funnel of trees. so that suggest a small tornado?

Probably a small tornado but the media over hype these events.

Yesterdays news headline was BIG tornado tears through Waikato. In reality it was 1 tree and a garage roof.

That was exceptional rain in the west of Auckland yesterday.

I think it was more like 15 large trees damaged or uprooted, plus some fairly minor property damage. Agree about Newshub's dodgy headline 'quote' though. However they did include a pretty good eyewitness account from dairy farmer, Woulter van Kuijk (scroll down to their 1:43pm and 1:51pm comments), as did Stuff in their initial story (towards the end), along with some good tree damage pics. Note that Stuff later toned down the word 'tornado', after quoting MetService as saying that that particular passing cell at the time "wasn't producing any lightning but it was still quite a tall cloud and had the potential to produce some gusts". Looks like they also had about 5mm dumped within about 5 minutes. It does kinda sound like a tornado though, or maybe it was just the 'Kaimai Buster' up to its old tricks again?

I discovered a possible tornado came through the local regional park here on the heavy rain day...I has reported there was poplar trees blown down
The damage at the park is in a very narrow line...tree branches twisted and broken off on descret only parts of pohutakawa trees
My toa met service lightning detector recorded strikes in the area at the same time too
