One of those are statistical rains, where you can count the number of drops by eye.

Re: General January Weather
It was proper rain in the area I mentioned, also at home the ground was wet when Ieft home. Not so much in Amberley township though, that's true!
Ok, edit to the earlier statement. It rained in mid and north Canterbury, to varying degrees

Re: General January Weather
Just hit 30 degrees in Christchurch with 40% humidity. We had 0.8mm recorded at the airport this morning, so a whole 2.2mm or so in about the last 40 days.

Re: General January Weather
Rumbles of thunder in Mosgiel and Dunedin, looks like a thunderstorm heading out to sea north of the city.

Nice and warm in Kaikõura now, 25C at the airport and feels every bit of that on the town end of the peninsula.

Re: General January Weather
That's what I log as "AFD" in my rainfall record, less than a 'trace' of rain which a few drops of rain have fallen and have not been recorded in rain-gauge.

Re: General January Weather
Not a AFD day today but a cloudy and warm day with NW winds and high cloud.
Working at Barkers, so not much observation of the weather as I was indoors.
Looked like that prospect of a clap or 2 judging by the cloud around the 4 Peaks area, with NWster.
Southerly came through after 9pm with some strong gusts.
Today's maximum was 28.3C.

Re: General January Weather
You need a polar jet to get thunder along the eastern coast of the South Island and I suspect the polar jet is becoming less common in summer, not that it was very common any way.
Most of the jet stream activity at this time of the year is more of a subtropical jet. Its a subtropical/polar jet combined.

Re: General January Weather
These last 7-8 years or so have seen less of the inland slow moving heat buildups here, there hasnt even been one in the Molesworth this summer and the summer before too.NZstorm wrote: ↑Thu 30/01/2020 06:57You need a polar jet to get thunder along the eastern coast of the South Island and I suspect the polar jet is becoming less common in summer, not that it was very common any way.

Re: General January Weather
Unusual for it to be above 25C this early here. Hotter than yesterday at this time and it was almost 29 max so will be interesting to see how warm today gets
