ok :-k AccuWeather had Culverden average at 21. Five days in heat wave it is then, day 6 coming up. Off to a warm start, didn't go below 19.2 overnight.

Phew, flew back to Tauranga last night after staying in Oamaru overnight. What a difference, stayed over 21°C and 90% humidity all night. I'm seriously considering investing in a heat pump for the bedroom.

Hamilton Airport down to a chilly 11C this morning with fog. Amazingly cool considering another hot day coming up for that area.

I notice Mt Cook Airport had early morning temperatures as warm as 22C, the same yesterday morning too. A lot of decending air there which produces the warming.

The finest of drizzle in the air here at times this morning, occasional drops of water coming off trees in the park.

Lowish overcast, about 17°C, and 72% humidity.

10.30am it reached 30.1 deg, this NW wind may not let it get much higher.

Yes, amazed me when I saw that as it was still fan on and no blanket temperature indoors when I woke up. My low was 14.9 and that was a very brief dip, it was over 16 for all but 1hr overnight. The field where the airport station is seems to be in the right place to get an outflow of cold air from somewhere, just around dawn. And the ground being so dry ATM it is heating and cooling easily.

Chris Raine wrote: Mon 27/01/2020 03:08 See you are getting drizzle John, the only station on the east coast of the South Island reporting this. Is the effects of the weak frontal system impacting the West Coast or some local Geraldine geographic feature?
Didn't notice this Chris, as i was asleep at the time but this morning I did notice the ground was quite damp, with 0.5mm in the rain-gauge.
Low cloud now clearing away to a higher AS cloud layer and a slight NW Arch which is quite good as no scorching temperature for today, well at the moment.

Morning cloud burnt off to totally sunny skies here. Weaker SW today has allowed the sea breeze to develop here, keeping the temperatures capped around 27 at the moment.

Looks likely as Ashburton was also getting the low cloud and drizzle and further inland.
Another 0.6mm of drizzle overnight but it has cleared away but still looks rather hazy.

Have noticed dew points getting up around 20degC on Sunday & Monday, wonder what the highest recorded dew point for Christchurch is?

More seriously I imagine RWood or someone else keeping an eye on those stats would have a good idea.

looking like the warmer second half has cancelled out the colder first half of the month and so January will come in around average temperature
after all for NZ as a whole

Bizarre month here. Quite dry but also very cloudy and still more than 1.2C below temp means MTD (only a guess from a map). Looking like back to 1947 or 1942 or even further to find a convincing example of this combination. Maybe the last 3 days will even things up a bit.

It rained in mid-Canterbury this morning, mainly between Kaiapoi and Amberley. As expected. Quite good to see it again!
