You need a polar jet to get thunder along the eastern coast of the South Island and I suspect the polar jet is becoming less common in summer, not that it was very common any way.

Most of the jet stream activity at this time of the year is more of a subtropical jet. Its a subtropical/polar jet combined.
These last 7-8 years or so have seen less of the inland slow moving heat buildups here, there hasnt even been one in the Molesworth this summer and the summer before too.
From memory the central NI, inland South Canterbury and inland Otago/Southland had an active Summer for late day heat showers/storms a couple of years back.

Sitting at 3.2mm with 36 hours to go. Looks like the record will be broken for sure

Yes, there was an active summer storm season a couple of years ago but that was a very unsual occurence of very high humidity nationwide. And the storm activity was mainly over the inland higher terrain. Places like Twizel got a lot of thunderstorms but Christchurch got none. Very odd season.
From memory there was little in the way of upper level dynamics, storms were largely driven from surface convergence only.

Yes we did. A lot of storms came over from the 4 Peaks/Mt. Peel area.

I'd be the first to admit I take very little notice of anything Metservice says so I might be a bit behind the times on this issue, but isn't this graphic (in fact the whole idea of the warning/watch process) confusing? If winds are expected to be "approaching severe gale force" in a location, then surely they must already be at gale force? In which case why is there no warning of such? Do Metservice not issue warnings for gale force winds any more? Perhaps someone who's more up with he play with our official weather warnings could explain?

In downtown Auckland today with work. Def warm. And muggy out there, bit cooler feeling than the 31 in Chch we had yesterday but not far off with the humidity.

Only if you need to follow Metservice, I certainly don't.

Looking at METVUW at the very dry warm spell for the North Is over the next 2 weeks on top of the current situation. SW to NW flows and little chance of any convergence anywhere . Brief heavy shower in kerikeri yesterday where we were [no thunder] I think ""sporadic"" is the term . Going to be some worried farmers out there.Boring as hell for the rest of us.Slip, slop, slap and tie down the umbrellas !

Extreme fire danger on the sign near the Conway River mouth on the way down from Kaikõura this arvo. Not a surprise, everything bar the trees is yellow.

I was actually surprised we never made it to 30 today. I know that's a funny thing to say in Auckland but my station already hit 28 just after 11am. Only went one degree further after that for a max of 29.1

I see Metservice gave Auckland a high of 27. Pretty sure Whangaparaoa got to 29 so I can only presume that rather than take the high from the highest of the four sites as they usually do, someone in Wellington decided to just use the airport max.

Maybe Whangaparaoa's T-max occurred after MS's 4pm cut-off time for their 'TV-temps'?

Max of 27.9C here at 2:30pm (my highest so far this year).
