General February Weather
Getting nice CGs from the approaching cell. Didn’t think I’d get any more but looks like this one might get me. This cell has some great structural aspects to it.

Re: General February Weather
Good to hear thunder again, bit of heavy rain and bit of lightning to boot.
CB tops quite soft and became glaciated quite quickly.

Re: General February Weather
Sunny windy day here. What rain we had yesterday appears to have mostly evaporated from the soil already

Re: General February Weather
I went down to North Waikato this afternoon, Cbs and distant lightning observed. There were quite a few thunderstorm cells around.

Quite an impressive upper level feature triggering those storms today. Hopefully we can get something like it again in March!

Re: General February Weather
Nice Cb pictures from you guys up Auckland area, over the Kaimai ranges
After yesterday's rain cleared away overnight delivering another 1.7mm of rain, it was a blue dome day here with a moderate NE for a while this afternoon. Today's maximum was 22C.
Some snow noticed on the mountains tops in the back country from yesterday's rain.

I can see the lightning waaaaay out to the north east. Wonder how far away that is. Must be some very high towers.
It has bursts of strong activity. Sometimes 3-4 strikes in 10sexonds then more normally 3-5 strikes per minute

Re: General February Weather
Not a lot of precipitation with the thunderstorms yesterday, not typical Waikato thunderstorms.

The LCL was fairly high compared to typical storm setups as well.

Re: General February Weather
Got a welcome 7 to 8mm in Cambridge area from them.. Combined with 18mm on Saturday almost enough to expect to see some green shoots. But it was very localised and alot of even close nearby areas missed out. Plus with a week of 28 to 29 every day coming up, won't last long.spwill wrote:Not a lot of precipitation with the thunderstorms yesterday, not typical Waikato thunderstorms.

Re: General February Weather
Yea I’m still not even double digits for the year yet so very isolated. Yea the storms yesterday were cold outflow piles of crap. Cold wind with little precipitation. Mind you some people got 10-20mm from them but they are isolated pockets.

Re: General February Weather
That front on Saturday which raced up the Canterbury plains, still had enough vigour once it hit the upper south island.
The southerly sucked up instability left over from late afternoon, and a few heavy showers grazed right over the Marlborough and Richmond ranges into Nelson.
The ranges normally act as a barrier to southerly systems unless its moving up the west coast too.
A bonus 5-8mm in some places and big fat drops too, plus a thunderstorm out around Durville Island.
Some areas are starting to look greenish up here, but still need a lot more rain yet.

Canterbury, home of good rugby and severe storms

Re: General February Weather
This month will break my record for highest mean daily maximum. Currently sitting on a mean max of 26.8C for the month, with around 27 expected each day for the rest of the month. Previous record was 26.1C in Jan 2018, so the record will be beaten by a good margin.

I see Grey Lynn is at min15.9C -max 26.9C monthly average to date. Very dry ground and high sunshine hrs has helped liift the maximumsDavid wrote: ↑Tue 25/02/2020 08:04 This month will break my record for highest mean daily maximum.
