Re: Hot or Warm 2nd 3rd February
Smoke was from a local fire so unlikely to be an effect

Re: Hot or Warm 2nd 3rd February
I think there's a lot of Aussie bushfire smoke now, all the way from the mountains. Together with the high cloud and haze from earlier that has taken a couple/few degrees off the temperature max. My car thermometer got up to 35C be in town, 33C at my mates' place in Swannanoa. So hats off to Metservice, they are pros after all!
Still really hot today though!

Sun looks very orange at the moment.
26° outside now, nice cooling breeze from the south-east.

Re: Hot or Warm 2nd 3rd February
I think they meant the bushfire haze that has been around chch today. The temperature could have been 2-3c higher with a clear sky.
Still 33c here at 6pm. It’s going to be a warm night!

Interesting and rare (for their location) observed soundings recorded today show massive warm inversion aloft, less present in the latter.
Auckland has an Adelaide-like sounding with warm dry desert air aloft above 900 hPa: Paraparaumu: Invers:

I saw that fine on the way home, it blended into the Australian smoke where it was hard to pick it out.

Re: Hot or Warm 2nd 3rd February
Hes talking about the local fire in Ashley, not the aussie one. I dont believe the Aussie smoke negated any heat today, it was all fohn effect of already hot air
Knocked on 37 here. Still 33 as at just on 7pm

Re: Hot or Warm 2nd 3rd February
Smoke layer here probably the worst its been this season, thicker than late December with the sun a red ball yet no high cloud visible from the satpic. Light levels notably impacted, and its definitely shaved quite a few degrees off the temps this afternoon. Slight smokey smell to the air also.

Re: Hot or Warm 2nd 3rd February
I think the north island was majorly impacted by the ausie smoke too. I’m in southern lake Taupo and it was a very dull sun here. Easily shaved a couple degrees here. So that’s a couple degrees it shaved off the east coast. The smoke was getting close to as bad as that day in Auckland back early Jan.

Re: Hot or Warm 2nd 3rd February
A heat record for Napier at 36.4C.
Shame it was a 0.1C higher as it would of got the 37C mark.
Imagine how hot it would be if the the Art Deco festival was on this weekend and those women walking around the street in those furs?

From Spreydon tonight.
NIWA are being pretty bullish about temperatures tomorrow in South Canterbury and Hawke's Bay:

I thought I would have a separate topic on this issue, regarding temperatures.
Will it get to 40C?
Could we a have a bet on this? I say Cheviot

Re: Hot or Warm 2nd 3rd February
Air thick with smoke from the Ashley fire this morning, can see it blowing in the streetlights, bits of ash falling. Orange glow in that direction

Re: Hot or Warm 2nd 3rd February
I would of thought so! Must be said that sleeping was a challenge last night. Blowing out there this morning, sitting back at 27 degrees and more blue sky about this morning. Will be interesting to see what we end up on today.
