Air thick with smoke from the Ashley fire this morning, can see it blowing in the streetlights, bits of ash falling. Orange glow in that direction

Hope that fire's extinguished quickly, melja.

25.2C at Chatham Island aerodrome today. Is that a record?
I think Chatham Aero's all time 'legitimate' record since records began there in 1999 is 26.0C in Jan 2013, followed by 25.9C in Jan 2018. Note though that the airport appears to record much higher temps than previous older sites around Chatham Island going back to 1878 (no data from 1915 to 1938).

Saw Whakatane Aero up to at least 36.1C earlier today, so another North Island record smashed.
Its previous all time record since records began in 1975 was 33.3C in Jan 2019, followed by 33.1C in Jan 1993.

Currently a glider at 5000 metres over Ashburton Lakes. Looks to have been as far north as inland Napier today, crossing Cook Strait twice.
That's Terry Delore, attempting a new record. He looks to be nailing it too

I have followed the campaign of Philip Duncan with interest over the years, but the link above (on Nev's post) poses a question. Whilst I understand the point he makes about a lack of data sharing (for free) by both MetService + NIWA, an answer to a comment on the above linked article on the Weatherwatch site refers to a reading of 40°C at a station on 'their' network that they do not make generally available for 'free'. Is this not the pot calling the kettle black?
I love the argument about 'official' versus 'standardised'. It did make me chuckle.
this whole IBM thing..its just wunderground data (IBM purchased wunderground then runined it basicly, removing lots of services and free stuff)..and this whole they verfied..its not like they physicaly have inspected the siting of the station surely?
The 850mb temperature over the Gisborn region was around 22C yesterday. So the 40C reading was 18C warmer than the 850mb which is stretching it but possible. But I can't comment on that particular weather station.
RE 40 degree temp claim. I saw that claim on Radio NZ, its shame that they have succumbed to sensational clickbait headlines as well.
At least it wasn't claimed to be "official".
It wouldn't be too hard for a follower of weather watch to post a suspect reading to confirm such a sensational forecast
