Re: Frosts reports 2020
This tweet from Metservice highlights the temperature difference between the two sites in Dunedin city and at the airport - they had a temperature difference of 15.5°C at 7am on 1st June 2020. That is some difference over such a short distance (24km).Nev wrote: ↑Mon 01/06/2020 12:41 I see MS's Dunedin Aero and Tara Hills (Omarama) sites were down to around -7C and -8C respectively this morn, while NIWA's Middlemarch site managed -10.0C.
Middlemarch also recorded -8.2C yesterday morn, which is likely to be the coldest temp reported in this May's climate summary. However, I did see the MS/NZTA South Waiouru and East Rangitaiki sites in the central N.I. down to at least -10.0C and -9.3C respectively on May 23rd.

There wouldn't be anywhere else in NZ as extreme as the Taieri Plains relative to the coast.

Re: Frosts reports 2020
Another good frost this morning with it getting down to minus 2.3C.
Regarding Dunedin, it is always milder in the city as compared to places like the Tairei Plains which is a cold, wide valley hence it being frosty as Compared to Dunedin city which never sees a minus temperature during the winter as compared to cities like Christchurch. There could be frosts in some Dunedin's valleys but never around the Octagon or in Musselborough, where the pumping station is, I think in south Dunedin.

Re: Frosts reports 2020
Had an interesting frost this morning in Mosgiel, Duneidn.
We had rain all yesterday, and when my hubby went off for his morning walk at 7.30 am everything was still damp, and there was cloudy skies and a temperature of 3.8 degrees. By the time he came home at 8 am the sky was clearing, and fifteen minutes later when I went out of the house to meet with the drainage contractor, the temperature had dropped to 1.1 degrees and everything was frozen, the paths and grass, and even the blocked drain the contractor was coming to fix.

63 places without power in Templeton due to ‘vehicle contact with pole’
That’s frost on the INside of the windscreen. If you’re planning on driving soon, be wary for black ice if you haven’t experienced it before.
And if your vehicle is outside you might need extra time than usual for clearing visibility...

-4.2C in West Melton with probably the most ice I’ve seen here in the last 7 years. Some spectacular ice/frost patterns on top of the car this morning!

Coldest temps yesterday morning from MS's website...
-6.4C … Pukaki Aero (Twizel)
-5.8C … Tara Hills (Omarama)
-4.8C … Alexandra Aero
-4.2C … Christchurch Aero
-4.1C … Mt Cook Aero
Which differs a little from this dodgy tweet that went viral in the media yesterday…

Hmm… Seems MS overlooked Kelburn's 5.1C yesterday morn?
