Re: General April Weather
this north tasman system is developing nicely on the Sat image
I think the models have not captured it very well (they did initially), due to missing data from areoplanes flying across the tasman...?

Re: General April Weather
Saw that article on newshub, and there's no attribution to where that figure came from? Either way, without a thousand years of rain data how can they really tell. I suspect we'll see similar droughts within less than 100 years from now, especially with climate change...

Re: General April Weather
Another nice sunny day here with NW winds. You wouldn't think that it was low pressure and instead an anticyclone was overhead , except for the NW wind. Some overthrow rain delivered another 0.9mm of rain overnight but it quickly cleared away and become a fine and sunny day. Today's maximum was 18C. Nice calm evening but cooling down.

Re: General April Weather
the heavy rain in the far north with the clash of the air masses has developed...but only clipping the far north
it might get a boost to drift further south with the second jet stream wave from the north tasman in as many days

i see the high pressure are incresing again. blocking out the lows. even though we are in drought. the daily showers last week helped my lawns to turn greener.

Yeah this video shows all the sets of waves coming inBeaconHill wrote: ↑Thu 16/04/2020 07:57 Hey Thunder
The Moa Point video was one I took on a quick bike ride just before lunchtime to coincide with the high tide.
It has to be one of the bigger swells I have seen in Wellington not associated with severe gale force winds. The period of the swell was incredible with massive gaps between the waves. Even right on high tide, one of the larger sets I saw broke completely across the harbour entrance between Barrett Reef and Pencarrow Head (no ships were in the channel at the time). The same was happening in Lyall Bay, with waves breaking one side to the other of the bay out beyond the end of the airport.
There was a rather impressive right hander peeling off from Palmer Head around into Breaker bay!

I think Waitangi 2002 is still the biggest from an offshore storm in the last 20 years but there isn't much photos of that event just a few Niwa Article on 2002 event
Also here's another video with some really really good footage

Re: General April Weather
Pretty settled around Chch at the moment, cooling off a little after the weekend but a fairly calm pattern of high teens in the day and colder at night. Though this side of the hills I woke to a pleasant 8C this morning rather than the frost under the inversion the other side!

Re: General April Weather
After a cool start, another fine and sunny day with NE winds becoming moderate this afternoon, but becoming calm this evening.
Today's maximum was 17.4C.
Here's a couple of photos I took of some interesting billowy cloud forms taken looking towards the SW later this afternoon.
They panned out to become a sort of K/H cloud bits as they moved further away to the NE.

Re: General April Weather
considering we are in drought. our next chance for real rain is at the start of may. models showing a low coming in.
I see the far north is about to get another lot of rain. which will miss us. metservice has drizzle forecasted for us though.
