Rain band looking very narrow, might be lucky to get 5mm indeed.

Wow, that band had some very heavy rain in it. Luckily only briefly. Wasn't expecting it to be as heavy. Peaked about 35mm/hr rate, much longer and it might have become problematic here. Looking at radar we dodged a bullet with much heavier & long last rain crossing North & South of us.

we got 10mm total, which I see Auckland got (11mm), so the models were correct

Clear start still with a breezy NW but shouldn’t last too long, already some development on the coast near Asburton. GFS and UK may have a things going more offshore again, but we will see.

Just nipped out into the garden, this is looking over the peninsula towards/beyond Akaroa:

Models dont look as good now for storms, no where near the moisture projected to come across as it was suggested yesterday. We will just have to see now. Still see some nice clouds about over the coast later and a chance but looks alot more coastal

It slowly adds up but amazing how much it will take to get surface moist again. We are now 100mm for the year but the ground is dusty again within hours of rainfall. Just shows how far behind we are.

I’m going to add up total rainfall over the past 18 months today. See how far behind normal we are.

The forecast soundings for inland Otago look saturated through the profile overnight tonight. Points to some briefly heavy snow over the higher ground. Snow level 500m?

3am Tuesday Central Otago

Risk retracted to the coast by MS, but still just about including Chch. Coastal storms now firing up around Timaru so we'll see if it's critical SW or not, certainly getting good heating now at least over Lyttelton.

That would be now, development overhead that will likely go out to sea. Also this from the same direction as earlier:

Wind seems to have gone easterly here but not sure if it's swirling with the development above or not. Still patches of sunshine.

Pretty much as SW as you can get today, although I see some heavy showers are now popping up on land near Ashburton possible storm there.
Seem to be blowing up quite quickly, so I wouldn't rule out a heavy shower for parts of the city in an hour.

Yes very unfortunate it's just the positioning of the low and where it crossed further south that has determined the more W-SW flow.
If only Zealandia was all land 😂.
I would have chased to birdlings today if not in lock down, probably getting a decent wee storm there now.
Very changeable ahead so keep an eye out for more seasonal thunder chances, not clutching at straws no 🤔😅.

Looked threatening in Akaroa about an hour ago, but must've just clipped the outermost southeast edge of BP according to radar.

Some great CB forms out to the east and south of here this afternoon, moving out to sea, but not much electrical life in them.
Nice sunny day here compared what I thought today would of been.
The westerly is a bit cool though.
