Re: General May Weather
15mm of rain overnight and this morning now.
could be some more rain this weekend and possible thunder.
edit : isee on radar "blue" is slowly increasing across auckland so perhaps the rain should get a little heavier.

Re: General May Weather
The Polar Vortex at 70hpa is a great deal more defined then this time last year and last years June weather, especially around the start of June was very eventful so lets hope a more defined polar vortex this year doesn't mean more settled, boring weather....TonyT wrote: ↑Tue 26/05/2020 22:26MJO skipped across phase 6 yesterday, across 7 today and tomorrow. and into 8 until the end of the month. Phase 8 is the most low pressure dominated phase. See how the MJO slows down and takes about 8 days to traverse phase 1 - thats the coldest phase which favours higher pressures west of NZ and south to southwest airflow over the country. There is probably a tie up between these MJO phases and the shape of the polar vortex in our part of the world.Chris W wrote: ↑Tue 26/05/2020 18:22 The potential cold outbreak is shaping more to be into next week than the weekend, but it is being consistently modelled and does seem consistent with the stratosphere directing the polar vortex to contain cold air over Antarctica west of us and potentially release it in our direction. An ongoing result of last year’s SSW.

Re: General May Weather
Frosty start but a fine day with not much wind. Today's maximum was 14.3.
Interesting inversion layers from fires across the plains today, drifting away from the north.

Re: General May Weather
Yep, another light frost here this morning. from my point of view it seems like frosts have started to become consistent a lot earlier this year... might be one of those very frosty, yet calm winters?
On the "cold blast" side of things for next week, GFS latest run is very cold but also SW, so Southland and Otago most exposed... sea level snow showers even being modeled for Southland I see.

Re: General May Weather
Foggy overnight but cloud lifting this morning and cloud gradually clearing away from noon.
Fine and clear afternoon but an interesting maceral cloud developed to the west prior to sunset.
Fine evening with it becoming frosty but later the frost eased off as cloud moved in.
Today's maximum was 10.4C

Re: General May Weather
Looks like a front spoils Aucklands weather today with some rain, Saturday could be OK with some sunshine, Sunday/Monday looks wet with widespread rain over the region.
Eastern Northland/Coromandal will be worst affected given onshore flow there, flooding risk looks marginal.

Re: General May Weather
Looking like a good snow maker for the S Island next weekend. Persistant troughing in the Tasman and Highs well south should dredge up the goodies on to the Eastern side. Just amazing how the patterns have done a 180 in just a few days. Looking forward to 100mm rain in this area Sat to Tues. [still dust 10 cm down here]

Re: General May Weather
So the month draws to an end, another dry one for most, although you northern folk have had a head start in getting decent falls.
Here in Halswell we have had 81mm in the past 6 months.

Re: General May Weather
Feel like in general it’s been incredibly sunny here this month just south of Auckland. I lost track of how many near cloudless days we had mid-month. Has that not been your experience? Granted my expectations my have been lowered from years of living in the UK...

Re: General May Weather
The low water storage levels are having negative impacts on Auckland so we want rain, lots of it.

Re: General May Weather
Was only referring to the weather since Sunday being quite dull, with that one sunny day yesterday and now back to cloudier skies again for a few days.Kentish Kiwi wrote: ↑Fri 29/05/2020 12:15Feel like in general it’s been incredibly sunny here this month just south of Auckland. 13mm locally so far this evening on that frontal boundary. Month to date up to 106mm, now only 19mm below my May average with another system to come.

Quite cloudy and overcast this morning but lower cloud lifting and high cloud developing, however a rather cool day with it only getting up to 11C.

Re: General May Weather
Some orographically driven heavy showers/isolated thunder over the Coromandal today. A mainly fine day for Auckland by the looks with a weak front to the south.

Re: General May Weather
A blue dome day here today, a blue sky with no clouds at all, all day.
Light NE breezes this afternoon but apart from that hardly any wind.
Today's maximum was 11.4C.
