Re: General June Weather
Getting shadowed a bit at the moment, still just light rain but it may be about to get heavier.
Looking at next Friday, GFS is opening the freezer door on the current run! Possibly getting excited, but there’s a good deal of cold air being delivered to the Southern Ocean ready to be tapped into.

Re: General June Weather
This morning’s gust front seen from the Port Hills - really interesting watching it grow then largely fall apart as it approached. It looked unreal at times. I have processed this photo a bit in Lightroom.

Interesting photo. Looks like a plume from a steam train going past.

Re: General June Weather
Drove up to Porters Pass to find a couple of cm’s settled near the summit and the police preparing to close the road or only allow cars with chains to pass. Looked like the snow was settling around the 500m mark on the way home, not a bad wee cold front for early June, looking forward to seeing some decent low pressure systems and heavy dumps of snow come late June/early July!

Well, just light rain here and the main band looks to be passing. Perhaps some interesting showers later.

Re: General June Weather
Stopped raining here now but still cold and overcast. Hardly any wind. Water in bird-bath still frozen, even though we had 7mm of rain from this morning's cold front.

Re: General June Weather
After a good frost this morning, it was a rather overcast and a cold, wet day with the southerly coming through around 9:30am, this morning.
Not a fine day as usually expected after a frosty start.
6.9mm of rain recorded for today, with a maximum temperature of 6.2C recorded here.
Remaining cloudy for much of the day with rain easing from about 1pm.

4mm from the weak front overnight. seems to be a cold winters sunny day here in auckland just a high of 15c. its been higher than that which is why it may feel cooler.

Re: General June Weather
2mm here earlier this morning. Doesn't look like much to get excited about here in the 10 day outlook. Will need a particularly wet second half of June just to reach average for the month

Re: General June Weather
Cold start this morning in rolleston! -4!! Cars totally iced over. Went for a drive to Sheffield for lunch. Stopped at the famous and local pie shop. And ate a nice pie while over looking this spectacular view! Finally some snow cover on the alps down to about 500m by the looks. I think Sheffield is about 300m?

Re: General June Weather
There was a very faint snowline on the north side of Mt Herbert this morning above about 700-800m but that is now gone. Seems the air was not quite as cold as modelled, or maybe the snow level was lower or is less melted away on the southerly aspect.

Re: General June Weather
2 cents worth.
The earth's main freezer chest is really cranking now on the surface along with a very strong stratospheric polar vortex above. No clear sign yet on when the vortex will show real weakness but there is going to be significant temperature gradient in the mid latitudes when the Jet stream shifts to a stronger meridional flow.

EU only showing 5mm for Auckland next 10 days. But this blocking pattern won't last into July.

Re: General June Weather
I'm embarrassed & got flack today. The big cold swing I was expecting to arrive Sat night hasn't shown itself/wasn't bad. So far only a couple of degrees colder. Name is mud, shoulda kept my mouth shut (I said I can't forecast to save myself, but was asked). I've blamed it on inaccurate models due to less pollution & flights Fingers crossed for a cold night tonight & ripper frost in the morning.Cyclone Tracy wrote: ↑Sun 07/06/2020 19:04The earth's main freezer chest is really cranking now on the surface along with a very strong stratospheric polar vortex above. Re: General June Weather
Lots of intense anticyclones over the winter period can lead to lots of low pressure systems over Spring as the sun moves further south from the shortest day, with increasing warmness on the surface from the sun adding to the unstableness of the layers in the atmosphere, from periods of colder weather.
Periods of anticyclones tend to wither as they move east, I find. I'm speaking from a surface analyse rather than atmosphere conditions further up.

Re: General June Weather
After a frost this morning, a lovely and fine day eventuated.
From minus 3.7C to 12.4C.
Here's a photo I took today, later this afternoon, from the Downs looking toward Mt. Hutt
