Re: General June Weather
Clevedon area showing 40mm in an hour which looks about right. The 70mm in an hour looks a bit high to me.

Re: General June Weather
is that intense rain band over the hunua ranges falling on the auckland dams or just to the west of them?
looking at a map...its just missing the dams!
mind you the last time they had heavy rain and low dam levels it filled the dams up with muddy water which caused problems with treatment

The heavy stuff looks just west of the Hunua Ranges, perhaps more cells will develop in the Firth of ThamesAwhituobs wrote: ↑Thu 25/06/2020 06:49 is that intense rain band over the hunua ranges falling on the auckland dams or just to the west of them?

Re: General June Weather
The EW Mangatangi site got 55mm overnight so some reasonable rain for the dams.
Another trough coming in later tomorrow so further risk of heavy precip and Isolated TS.
Grey Lynn on 134mm for month now.

next lot of CBs are about to hit the far north with isolated thunderstorms. lets see if they make it down still with thunder or they weaken.

Re: General June Weather
Auckland is in between systems today so I don't expect anything here but tomorrow we are in the firing line late in the day. Just hope something develops around here.

Re: General June Weather
Auckland water storage levels will be coming up now with the catchments now wet and spells of heavy showers into next week.
La Nina should give us a very different Summer this year compared to the last two Summers where sea breeze convergence and sub tropical systems were shut out by persistent west/southwesterly.

UKMet 00Z upgrading Auckland for 40 to 100mm in the next 48 hours due to the slight adjustment to the position of the Tasman cut off low from the 12Z run. BoM's Access G3 going for 50 to 125mm.

Re: General June Weather
Jet energy sailing by to our south, speaks to a slack pattern for a bit unless that jet can kink at all. The strat vortex is too displaced towards South America and too organised with some -85 degrees C at its core. Let’s hope for some distortion nearer to the surface!

Re: General June Weather
GFS showing a good moisture influx onto the upper North Island tomorrow with dewpoint upto 15C. So storm potential tomorrow looking good with isolated downpours given the moist air.

Re: General June Weather
Kaitaia dew point is currently a moist 15C, temperature is 18C. A dp of 15C in the middle of Winter is usually a good signal for some weather action somewhere.

Re: General June Weather
The missing ingredient tonight is upper flow, 500mb wind looks weak at 20knots. Tomorrow the mid level flow increases to 30knots which is better. Not saying there won't be lightning around tonight though, I just prefer to see strong winds aloft on a set up.

Re: General June Weather
BOM and GFS looking at some persistent rain for Canterbury on Sunday into Monday, particularly mid-Canterbury on GFS and South Canterbury on the BOM. Metservice don't have it in their outlook so perhaps it won't reach warning levels, but it looks potentially heavy somewhere.

Auckland dam storage is up to 49.2% after the recent heavy rain - a 4% increase in the last few days

Re: General June Weather
Currently a strengthening east to north easterly locally, with the next surface trough moving into Northland. I'm starting to like the look of where the convergence zone is going to position itself later on tonight.
